recycle?

i cannot belive this country ..... i just noticed that they didnt empty our recycle bin yesterday.... they only collect the rubbish once every 2 weeks......

so its at a premium for us as a family.... on opening it up there was a bulb in there which some nice person had put in when they went past.

so i called the council up to say that someone had thrown it in there after i had put my bin out thinking that maybe it was this.

well imagine my shock when i was told it wasnt the reason it wasnt collected, but it was the shredded paper that was in there. :? :? :?

we like mosts houses shred all paper work now through fear of id fraud......but it seems the council have caught on to this now and are no longer collecting bins with it in. you must take it elsewhere yourself ..

what a crack of you know what that is huh ...... to make it worse i was told i will need to empty my bin now as its contaminated....

that will be the end of recycling for us then ...im sorry but this country has gone mad

yep our bin men wont empty our recycling bins because we dont clean and remove every bottle and can and remove all the labels, and they dont like it because out curver box is not big enough for a household of 6 so we end up with a plastic bin bag full on top of the curver box they supply, yet only up the road in the flats a old couple who dont have anyone else in the household, they get a big dustbin for their recycleable, and they can mix all their plastics / glass and Tins yet they complain that we dont seperate them ](*,) ](*,) :scold:

We now have 4 bins, rubbish, paper, bottles/plastic and a green garden waste bin, but if we want the garden waste collected we have to pay an extra £30 per year! but if we dont pay we still have to keep the green bin on our drive as they wont collect them back "in case they dont change next year"  :troll:

I thin that recycling and bin collection is the biggest scam ever pulled off buy local govt in a way to provide a terrible service "For the sake of the planet"

And they wonder why there is so much fly tipping.

I wouldnt mind how complex they made it provided it does not cost any more, but it always always seem to end up whit us lot paying.

That said my binmen are fine, possibly something to do with the crate of booze I leave out on boxing day!

We can only put certain types of plastic bottles in our recycling bin and definately no yoghurt or spread cartons.

I've always maintained that for recycling to work, it has to be simple. No sorting, no removing lids and labels, no cleaning, etc. If it could all be dumped in the same bin, more people would do it. Surely, this has to be worth the additional cost of sorting it at a depot?

Fortunately, we barely get half a bin full every fortnight because we try to avoid buying products with too much packaging anyway.

Huntindonshire's recycling scheme is considered one of the best in the country - probably because it's simple. I have three wheeled bins: blue, green & Grey.

The blue one is for dry recycling: plastic bottles, paper, cardboard, cans and Tetapaks (juice cartons). They will take a small amount of shredded paper - too much and it causes problems when they come to sort it. We also can't put glass in there.

The green one is for garden waste and also food waste - cooked or uncooked, including bones, meat, fish, veg etc.

The grey one is for everything else.

I rinse out bottles and cans for the recycling bin to keep it clean - takes moments to do, and saves on having to clean the bin!

I tend to fill the blue one in a fortnight, and quarter fill the grey one without trying too hard. We can also get a bag of the composted waste to use as "soil improver" from the local tip (sorry, recycling centre).

I think people are annoyed where councils have tried to make it easier for themselves rather than their residents - some schemes have stupid rules, limits or lots of bins / bags / boxes to put different stuff in.

Well I think I can beat you all.

I have :-  2 boxes, 2 wheelie bins and a pink plastic sack

Brown wheelie bin for garden waste.
Green wheelie bin for normal waste that does`nt go in other boxes/wheelie bins.
Grey box for cardboard and glass.
Green box for paper and magazines.
Pink plastic sack for plastic.
All well and good but where the hell do I PUT THEM ALL ?
Also my bins only get emptied every 2 weeks.
The council sell the stuff on making money, so how come my council tax seems to go up every year ?

ah, being a recycling ranger myself I maybe able to help!

Our council is very lax on taking things we shouldn't, ie we take stuff anyway as it is less ear bashing from the public for us!

Shredded paper is a nightmare to be honest. It blows back out the lorry when moving along to the next bin or there is shredded stuff under newspaper and we think it will fit in the side of the lorry, tip it out and shredded paper everywhere. It truly is a proper nightmare to pick up off the floor. Ever tried sweeping up shredded paper? This is probably why they dont take it.

as for the bag of recyclable stuff. As long as you split up the bag into plastic and another glass it is ok. We dont like sorting through bags of recycling as it is a; a pain to undo the super tight knots people put in them with gloves on, it is so slow to grab the plastic / glass out as our gloves stick to the bags and b; most importantly, it is too difficult to see if there are any sharp items in the bag ie needles or broken glass. In a box it is easy to see but a balck/pink/tesco bag is ghard to spot needles in and could potentialy pierce through the side and get us easier than the box.

Onto the person who said it has to be washed out. Oh, how we love those kind of customers. People who chuck non washed out dog tins in boxes and then get flies all around the box etc truely is just horrible to sort through and the smell can be very unpleasant. So this is why we like clean boxes. It is kinder on the nose and no maggots end up going down the inside of our gloves!

Meant to say.

It is ALOT safer to put any confidential waste into your compost bin. Once it is in the back of the bin lorry squashed up against all the sap from trees and other rotting matter, once it gets emptied at the composting site it is unreadable and gets put straight through a huge shreadder again to make everything compost down faster. Putting it in your paper box means it could blow out the lorry into the wrong hands, once it gets tipped it is still in paper form so some horrible person could possibly pick it up and read it, once it leaves the yard, who knows where it goes then! Middle east or into a newspaper the same day? Who knows.

So I say any shreaded paper or confidential stuff, stick in your compost wheelie bin!

All the stuff we shred goes straight into our own compost bin - makes great compost with all the other kitchen waste.

we sometimes have an inspector ride with the bin men checking the bins and issueing warnings if you put the wrong stuff in.
cardboard goes in the green waste bin but when it gets to the compost site they sort it out of the green waste and put it in another bin, the guys there say it drives them mad but its what the council wants, part of the problem is when the cardboard etc gets shredded up by the greenwaste shredders it then blows off around the countryside and they get fined for causing a mess :roll:
was quite amusing at xmas, everyone carefully seperated their waste into the various bins then the council landfilled the lot as they ran out of room to put the recyclable stuff in

well we never clean out our tins bottles etc the council refused to take it once the wife then emailed the council saying if they want it washed then they can pay towords our water and if they want to keep making money from our waste they will take it or it will just go in the normal bin as we dont get any of the money they make just junk mail saying how so much reclycling can pay for lights to stay on in ya home ect only way that would happen is if we save it all and weigh it in ourselfs once a year since then they have taken it every time

Presumably, as it becomes more and more automated at the depots (will this ever happen?) the requirement for households to do the sorting will reduce. That'e really part of my argument for simplifying the system. I am 100% convinced that more people would recycle if it was easier to do.

In Birmingham we have green boxes for metal,glass and plastics and blue ones for paper and cardboard. I used to make a point of cleaning cans and plastic pots before putting them out....now here comes the rub.......... Birmingham council have run out of money for thr recycle system now that the price of paper,plastics and glass has fell due to the recession,i have a friend who works in the council owned privately run (french!!) tip in Perry Barr and he's told me that all the recycle goes straight into landfill! So i for one can't be bothered to waste my time with it anymore.

My glass and plastic box hasn't been emptied for the last three collections (6 weeks) so this morning it all went in the 'rubbish' bin.

Pembrokeshire probably has the lazyest recycleing system?

We have black bags for normal waste

We have orange bags for recycleing materials.

In the orange bags you place paper/cardboard type stuff, plastic bottles and cans/tins.

If you want to, you can mix all these items together in the same bag, so shredded paper is no problem.

Personally I have the space for several bins, so i bought 4 black bins and separate my own recycleables, so I put one black bag out a week and usually one orange of cardboard until the tins or plastic fills a bag then they go out.

We have all been provided with a compost bin, which for some is stupid because even if you have no garden or place to keep it you still got one!! And we can't recycle glass through this system, we have to take it ourself to the bottle banks.

i had a letter put through my door saying that i dont recycle, i was fuming as i put out recyling out every week.
i put my old bin out for them to take away and they didnt as apparently you have to phone them for a collection.
i told them i had the bin a kids slide a hoover and a pc monitor. and they said they had to send 2 lorries why the hell they got to do that waste all that extra time and money they should of just taken it in 1,

They're building a plant like that near me - everything in the grey bin will go there and be sorted for recycling purposes. They'll still do the separate collections so as not to overwhelm the system.

I'm not particularly green (I driver a Land Rover [Edited]!) but recycling, energy lightbulbs, insulation and stuff like that is easy to do and some of it actually saves you cash too.
