Confused.
« on: February 27, 2009, 10:22:43 »
Ok. I'm new to off roading and i'm confused. I have learnt that my terrano has poor ground clearence and crap tyres as i am now minus sump guard and it took a hefty recovery involving a tractor. I have been told for mud and soft stuff not to fit fat/wide tyres but alot of people hear seem to have wide tyres. The terrano is currently on 215/15. And also i want to raise it an inch or so...
So advice is. Wat would be better standard 215's with/without lift fitted with good tyres or fit a lift kit and wide wheels. Any advice would help.

hi mate i had 235/85/16 on my disco, i found they cut through the mud and find the hard surface, which sometimes is a good thing but i found i got stuck more often as they cut trought and my axles ground out.
now im running 33/12.50/15 and i find them great aint been stuck YET and they sort of ride over alot of mud,

thats my opinion but each to there own and im sure you will get alot of different advice from people on here. but i find my landy goes better with the wider tyres

It depends upon what sort of mud it is to be honest.

There are generally two forms of motion offered by mud-tyre design,  the first is intended to propel you forward by displacement (moving as much mud from infront of you to behind you), tyres with heavy sidewall design tend to be for this (note "tend").

The second mechanism is by digging downwards to find something more solid to drive on.  This tends to work quite well in clay but isn't especially effective in a bog, as you tend to find the floor with the axles long before you find anything solid.

Essentially it comes down to a lot of complicated mathematics (which I don't even pretend to understand) but a "good" mud-terrain tyre will generally try to reach a compromise between the two anyhow.

There are reasons for a lift of course, but that's mainly with increasing ground clearance to overcome obstacles,  whilst this comes into play when stuck in mud it's not the whole story, and hopefully better tyres and a more sensible line would prevent you from getting into difficulty in the first place.

Having said all of that, there is a huge amount of driver ability to throw into the mix, rubber and air can only compensate for so much.  That's not to say you're a bad driver (I have no idea whether you are or not) merely that experience and practice can make a much bigger difference to ability than just about anything else.

Yeah driver ability prob had a bit (lot) to do with it. I now the tyres are crap. Their road tyres so top of the list are all terrains on the wheels i have. Experiance is also a must.

Looking at offroad tyres. I am used to lowprofile tyres 215/40/17.
But what is a 31/10.50/15. And what size of wheel would i need to fit them to my jeep. I know a 15" wheel but whats the rest mean?

So advice on both subjects would help

Cheers john

31 = 31" overall diameter
10.50 = 10.5" width

Good old fashioned imperial dimensions!

I have a Terrano 2 and run 31/10.5x 15 mud tyres.

You'll gain the extra clearance you need by fitting larger diameter tyres and the above is about as big as you can go without major work.

The 10.5" width will fir on 7" wide rims which if you've got alloys are likely that size.

Terranos are actually pretty ahndy off road/greenlaning.
Cheers, Nathan.
