when changing the head gasket on a 200tdi disco does the head have to be skimmed in order to put the new gasket on . . .

took it up for mot earlier and it started smoking rather alot of white smoke got it up there garage said sorry cant do it due to amount of smoke coming out . . . i then explained i took the head off etc and he asked if i had the head skimmed and that i should have it skimmed and new gasket put on . . .

any help please people

You need it skimmed if it is not flat to within the required tollerance, you need it checked first then skimmed if required.

where would be able to check it .. . . and how much would i cost ruffly if u know . . .

brights on filton ave mate and think its about 40 quid but could be wrong plus you will need to strip the head and take out the injectors but im sure you can leave the valves in place ring them firstto get the price

when ever ive cheaked a head ive used a straight rule and a torch and cheak all over to see how much light comes under the rule

My head gasket blew last year ... we checked it at work on an engineers flat block placing the head face down on the block then trying to get a feeler guage under it,, then using a a ground block to check the bits between the barrels.. it checked out flat so we didn't skim it and it's been fine...

so if i can get it on a flat surface and check form there to see if its all level . . ill try something and see what happens

Best thing is an engineers metal rule and a lighter the other side if you can see the flame at all, it needs skimming. Use the narrow edge of the rule on the block, not the way you would use it to draw a line if you get what I mean.

yea head has to be skimmed used the lighter and straight end and saw the light coming through . . . just another question people where the fuel pipes go into the head im guessing thats the injectors connecting to the head just wondering how they come out . . just dont wna end up breaking them . . .

they just pull out mate there is no threads on them just a copper washer and make sure you dont loose them or its a trip to the shop for some new ones

They just pull out and when you put them back lightly copper slip them and get a new set of copper washers as they are compresion and leak easily. You may also need to replace the little copper washers (8) on the over flow pipe. When you put it all back together be very carefull not to over tighten as they snap very easily......... I just did this job on my motor on Sat and I would of saved myself a lot of time if I had just spent the couple of pounds on the washers in the first place as I ended up over tightening one of the injector clamps because it was leaking due to reusing the copper washer and it snaped so I had to fit a new stud as well :roll:

I ended up over tightening one of the injector clamps

yea i snapped 1 of those bolts before so went very careful this time round lol . .

well everything is all done in the end the head was fine didnt need skimming had my mate come round who is a mobile machanic and he checked it said it was fine so i checked it again with his choice of tools and he was right . . so new gaskets r on all tightened up started fine and 1st time :dance: still a little bit of smoke but guessing thats whats left in the system . . and its just burning it out . . also sounding and running very nice

next test is mot on tuesday [-o< [-o<

I'd have to say lack of fluid in the cooling system or possibly a water leak would be one of the biggest reasons but like all things, it comes down to loads of different factors.

LR manual says you can't skim the head :-k at least not on the 300 which isn't that different.

What causes head gasket failure?

Usually overheating or incorrect fitting - as to what causes the overheating..... Water leak, no colant, blocked rad, low oil pressure, etc. etc. etc.... take your pick............!
