Government to move national speed limit to 50

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I missed it if it was. From another forum.
The government is planning to reduce the National Speed Limit from 60mph to 50mph on many single carriageways. This change would affect over 60% of UK roads - it could be introduced as early as 2010.

Looks to me like another Gordon Brown Stealth Tax as well.
Drop the speed limit and you make more from the camera

I knew it would only be time before this happened. So many roads are becoming 50mph speed limits anyway I had a feeling they would bring it in as the national limit. :-(
Get rid of this waste of space and focus on getting the country out of the resetion not make people poorer by secretly bring ing in lower limits.
So will that mean vehicles towing will go down to 40mph and lorries down to 30mph? Yeah, that will work. NOT

It won't be a problem to me unless they set the minimum at 50.

Won't be the first time the speed limit was 50mph (remember the seventies?). I didn't have any problems with it then and I see no reason why it should cause problems now.

I don't drive more than 50 on the roads round here, but that is not the point!!!
WHY do they think this is a good idea?? and WHY do I have to pay for more legislation that annoys me??
Wunch of Bankers
EDIT: Just read some of the links, and its the usual knee jerk reaction to a situation.
They reckon that
New research by the Department for Transport has found that reducing the speed limit could save 200-250 lives a year and also reduce carbon emissions
So that by reducing the limit suddely the idiots that cause these crashes are going to slow down?? You canbet that they were no where near the speed limit when they caused these accidents in the 1st place!!!
But they go on to say this
Ministers plan to use average speed cameras, which monitor speeds over distances of up to six miles, to help enforce the new limit. The cameras have already been installed at 43 locations. The Home Office is expected to approve their wider use later this year
And so we come to the REAL reason!!

honestly i can't say i'm that fussed either way however, in a head on crash you would still catch the other guy with a combined speed of 100 mph and i feel fairly sure that even in a new car it would likley be the last thing you did.
