discovery or jeep which is best
« on: March 15, 2009, 21:21:29 »
i am not actually asking for an opinion (but someone will give one)
was in the pub last night and we started discussing 4x4's
as  i have a disco i explained the reasoning behind buying it

i still had the 4x4 bug after owning an old series 2 years ago
so looked at a number of 4x4's liked the shogun and the disco
did lots of research and went for a disco on the grounds of:
if it went wrong i could afford to repair it
so far the repairs have been affordable and i thoroughly enjoy the disco shoguns are still nice as for off road ability the disco is good mines let down by the driver

my friend said the jeep was better  as it doesn't wallow in corners as the centre of gravity isn't as high as the disco
i personally have had no probs with corners in the disco but i am a steady driver (anybody else had problems getting a disco round a corner) he also stated the land rover had lost their way in introducing coil sprung land rovers as they weren't aiming for the right market

he also explained to me how good the jeep was off road compared to the disco
now i am no expert on jeeps ( i like the looks of the older ones) as i have never driven one and i know there are some jeep owners on here and Suzuki and shogun and lada and (well get my point)
but the few off roading days i have been to seem to be dominated by the green oval
so where did my friend get his knowledge from

WELL I HAVENT GOT A CLUE AS IT TURNS OUT HE HAS NEVER DRIVEN A DISCO DEFENDER OR A BLOODY JEEP

i raise my glass to the uninformed and  pmsl

now in my opinion the only week link in the disco is the idiot behind the wheel OOPS that's me

well if you meet me at a mud club event and you have a different 4x4 to mine let me have a seat in yours as i think ALL 4x4's are cool and you can have a chance to join Mr useless getting stuck (some thing which i am good at)

Yep Green Oval will always be cheaper to repair but you will be repairing it every weekend !. I speak from experience as I have had a Defender 90 which I got sick of repairing and I now have a Shogun that I have done 1 repair on (fuel pump) in 11 months. I also enjoy driving home in comfort after a days laning or playing.

One important point.... Land rovers are much taller than Jeeps, so if you want to do tight gnarly lanes you'll prob be backing out of some that Jeeps can make it through.... LR's are also very square, where as Pajero's/Jeep taper in so they can squeeze by.

This picture shows my Cherokee's height is the lowest in this group (even with a 4" lift and 34" tyres...)

I've had 6 LR's, but I much prefer Cherokee and Wrangler, very capable and reliable, 4.0 in both.
Laning patches will only keep the desire at bay for a few days, get in the mud and enjoy the banter.

Some say that this is just a random collection of letters, and that it can only be
understood by Top Gear's tame racing driver. All we know is, it's called The Sig.

i personally have had no probs with corners in the disco but i am a steady driver (anybody else had problems getting a disco round a corner)

The only people who have had problems with them on corners are dopey Top Gear test drivers (who described it as a "point to point widowmaker" in their review of the Disco 2). It doesn't handle like a normal car, so you have to learn how to handle it after which all will be well. The older models without anti roll bars will be more of a handful, and it's worth bearing in mind that the youngest of the Disco 1s is now ten years old. If it hasn't had new shocks or springs in that time then it will tend to be a bit wallowy and uncertain.

If you take a Disco with anti roll bars, replace the springs and shocks with good quality ones (I really rate the De Carbon gas shocks, they made mine handle like a completely different car), fit proper polybushes and some decent tyres (the BFG A/T is great for on road - better than the pure road tyres I had before them!) then it will be perfectly stable. If you're on a fairly flowing road it'll happily corner at the highest legal speeds, you just need to keep it smooth.

The other benefit of this approach is that by keeping momentum up you don't have to be as heavy footed to maintain a good average speed, so you save fuel by cruising at 60 as opposed to the wallies who stand on their brakes for the slightest bend!

Please remember without Jeep, LR wouldn't have anything to copy and your only going to look like a yank if you dress like them, my mother in law drives a Honda, does she now look Japanese? haha....

As Bishops Filnger says, Cherokee very capable off road....
