Where to get a TD5 battery?
«

The battery needs replacing on my '99 TD5. The local motor factors sold me one but it was much smaller than the original; then they changed it for a larger one, but that was just too big to fit in the tray. Halfords were out of stock, and theirs didn't look to be quite the same size / shape as the original one either. LR dealer can do me one for £121, and Challenger also have them for £110 / £140 depending on which exact battery I want, but I was sort of expecting to get one for about £70-80.
I'd like to get one to match the original as the battery tray is obviously designed to exactly fit it, so it won't end up moving around. The original is rated 110Ah incidentally. Any suggestions on where to get one? Surrey/Hants/Berks border ideally.
Thanks, David

you could try a tractor dealer or similiar they may have what your looking for, the only ones i can think of off the top of my head are golf and turf in wokingham, d and s tractors which i think are near arborfield or roger hunts near hartley wintney

I've learned it's apparently a Group 31 battery. Crazymac, your website shows these up in the search results but the product pages then don't refer to it, which is a bit offputting, particularly given the return postage costs... I'll keep hunting, at least I have a few leads now. Thanks.

I juts got mine from Halfords.
If they are out of stock you can just ask them to get one in.

They had one which is "roughly" the right size but I don't think it's a Group 031. I got one from Challenger earlier, but stupidly I didn't take the truck (well, the battery is knackered!) so I came back with another which is slightly too big. They're getting some in tomorrow which should be the right ones so I'll pop back then.
All the ones I've tried so far which are supposed to be the right battery have turned out to be about 5mm too big in each dimension, which means they don't sit properly in the battery box, wedging near the bottom. Given the weight of a battery, I want one that fits, even if it ends up costing me more.

Hi Ya
I can recommend tayna. I ordered a battery and it arrived the next day. The delivery charge for a huge lump of lead is never going to be cheap, but Tayna were very reasonable.
I fitted the 644 (I think - check sizes) and it fits perfectly in the standard disco battery bay. It fills the entire space. Very pleased and never looked back.

Are you sure? I tried a 644 (two in fact) and it was too large; fitted in the gap, but it wedged against the plastic moulding at the sides and back of the battery case, so it actually sat about an inch above the bottom of the case, putting a lot of pressure on the edges. You might want to check. Maybe my battery box is a different size than others, but the 644 definitely didn't fit. It sat solidly and levelly but was not going to do the battery box any good at all, or probably the battery given it was wedged in by the edges.
Challenger sorted me out with an 031 in the end. It now fits perfectly. Thanks, guys!

Hi thermidorthelobster
Yes I definitely have a 644 in the disco. Only paid 65 or so for it. Very pleased. Fitted fine. I used the original mountings too.
