Concentrate on the distributer - that's what causes most problems on the carb models. Usual thing of sealing the base of the cap, taping the breather hole (remove when not required), and a spray of WD40, or similar, on the leads.
If you've got the 1.7 injection model, it's a case of spraying the leads and coil pack. Even better would be to move the coil pack to a higher location. The leads are long enough to permit this.
On both 1.6 and 1.7, it's possible to move the alternator from the bottom, right of the engine, to the top, left, provided you don't still have the spare wheel under the bonnet. If you look on either difflock, or
