lpg installing / removing?
« on: March 19, 2009, 17:23:55 »
As petrol is going up AGAIN in april I am thinking I should be doing something I should have done 9 years ago and lpg my rover!

I am wanting to lpg it but dont really want to spend 2k on paying for it as it will take for ever to get the money back! So my idea is, Buy another rover 620 with lpg off ebay, remove the lpg system and put it back on ebay and fit it to mine then get a gas person to sign it all off.

I know whats coming. Sell mine and keep the lpg rover. Yeah I could, but my rover has such strong sentimental values towards my late dad, I know the car inside out and I have replaced most of the running gear. Engine, gearbox, brake calipers, drive shafts, radiator etc, and touch loads of wood, all the electrics work which is rare for a rover! So I want to keep mine!

Also by having another rover to remove the kit from then hopefully it should be easier as I just unbolt out of one and then look how it was done and install into mine!

Whats your thoughts?

research your lpg stations. If you end up doing a special trip .......

The car will need to be the same spec as yours  etc...  if you do install it use new copper pipes and unions and solder the wiring.

Check your insurance cover too

lpg station is easy. Work has one 1/4 of a mile away.  :D

So far I have found a 620 that is the sportier model than mine and a tad over priced I think on ebay. I will do a proper search if it sems a possible way of getting an lpg conversion cheaper.

most parts are non- specific to make/model , tank, vapouriser, emulator, filler etc. but you will need some that are specific to your car.

Try looking at tinley tech website and similar and price a new kit, possibly alot cheaper than you think.

Also try putting a bag of spuds in your boot and working round them (similar to 60l tank)  ;)

I think I will fill an old dog food bag up with something. Same size as a bag of spuds. :-)

If I could bear to part with the rover and spend some dosh I could buy my neighbours diesel mondeo as they are thinking of selling it. better mpg (not as good as my rover on lpg in theory 70mpg). but how long will lpg stay at the low fuel rate? thats why I havent done itbefore as I know as soon as I do it the goverment will hike it up to the same as petrol. also how much road tax do you save? Any ideas?

I will look at that site you said at the weekend. It's mainly choosing the best route to plumb it all in I would be concerned about and another car next to mine the same would be handy.  ;)

I hope you dont mind me adding my 2 pennth But  its not that simply
NOW IV DONE THIS to my perral 1 if the gas tanks are over 10 years old buy law they have to be certified not just safty checked so make shure they are as new as you can get and no corosion as they will fail the safty check
the next thing its hard to find a company that will safty cert what they have not fitted and supplied
your truck will need seting up and a sniff test
the next thing is if you dont have a safty cert some insurence companys wont insure you (but zurik do) and it makes no difference with them
and if you can plumb you  :Dfit a gas kit the best of lock as I found it realy easy and my skills are very basic :D just remember if in dought ask glad to help if I can If not I a friend in the auto lpg trade who is willing to help

I thought that 5 years back  ;) it was @27p/litre then

As for road tax you will save the grand sum of 'nowt' unless your car is 2001 or newer  :'( :'(
just lower running costs

The tanks have a manufacture/ test date and you can buy a new one for less than the retest.

I fitted my own and have had no bother with insurance.

If you can think logically, use a spanner and do a bit of wiring you will be ok.
If you want in certified there are people who will do it for £50-£75

I hope you dont mind me adding my 2 pennth

Thats the whole idea  ;) ;) ;)

I'm all for doing what you can if you can
But:
I would think very very hard about spending too much on a car for sentimental reasons. Its a horrible thing to have to accept but they just don't last forever.

That said if anybody ever sees 73 BAY on a  2A let me know!

I know sentimental is a bad thing but I just love the car for the car as it is too. Ok, the headlining is held up by stapples and a few rust spots here and there I am trying to keep on top of but as a running car it is spot on. I did 240 miles this weekend and it was still a pleasure to drive and didnt feel tired at the end of each 110 mile journey. It is reliable too which I love.

In a way with 230k on the clock everytime I fill the car up with petrol I write it off  but to me value of vehicle means nothing to me. Reliability means everything, hence why my rover is my favourite car as I know it will start in the morning, every morning.

and yes, feel free to add 2 or 3 pennies worth. all donations welcome be it in J2O tokens or advice.

on the road tax you wont save any thing as the verchal is registered b4 2001, and with the kit if your verchal has a (ecu you will need  laptop cable and soft wear iof you want it to work efficently or no some one in the no
