Crank damper bolt
« on: March 19, 2009, 20:24:22 »
My timing belt has gone bang, which is not a huge worry but I cannot get the large bolt undone on the crank damper. Have had a locking tool on it with a 4 foot scaff bar on my long breaker bar and all I managed to do was bend my locking tool and shear a bolt that held it on.

Anyone got any ideas of something else I can try???

put a braker bar on the bolt, and wedge it on the chassis (drivers side), disconnect the stop solenoid wire and flick the engine over on the key, that will undo the bolt

I've seen them lock the pulley wheel by winding a rope around it and tieing it to the chassy (in the right direction so it tightens as you undo the bolt)

if the cambelt has snapped the damage is already done, so it wont hurt it much, (might be worth taking the rockers and pushrods off and do it that way, the you know the valves will all be closed)

OK, have tried using the engine, have tried my air gun (although not convinced this is working correctly) have tried heating it up and bouncing on it with big bar and still no joy.

What if I cut the washer off would that help relieve the pressure on the bolt and then let it come undone?????

Wow - unusual for a rattle gun to not work!

What size gun is it and have you got access to a bigger one!?

Mine have always come off just using a breaker bar and the engine hold bar against the chassis leg.......... (mind you, there has alwasy been a bit of back pain involved later!  ;) )
Son, life has a habit of kicking you in the ass and i only have vague recollections of when it wasn't kickin mine!

Not sure of exact spec of the rattler, it is an old one I was given, unfortunately I dont have access to another one, might shop for new one and see if that is any better.

Hook a set of jump leads from another vehicle up to the battery and then use the engine again, you might have to do it several times, or let it get a bit of momentum (before it hits the chassis). Where abouts are you located?

Finally got the thing undone, just as I was about to call the scrap man to take the landy out my sight!!!
I ended up cutting 3 grooves into the washer beating it with a big hammer and chisel then bouncing on my breaker bar with scaff bar slid over it.
This after breaking 2 breaker bars, heating the life out of the bolt and washer and trying just about everything.
Now just need new washer and a good clean up.

Sorry a bit late with advice, but may help others in future, you need about 3ft of 1" angle Iron the HD stuff then drill 2 holes to hold some bolts and cut a notch for the 27mm socket, the bolts go into the pulley, and when you crack the crank nut with a breaker bar, the angle Iron locks the pulley in place by contacting the floor, I'll measure the one I made and but on here when I finish work to night. :D

Cheggs - He's already got the propper crank locking bar that sits against the chassi and bolts to all 4 holes in the damper - this problem was even WITH that fitted!
