A pressure washer and try not to poke it at the plugs on the electrics too much. Have the engine nice and warm before you start and if anything does get wet, then it'll dry out in a few minutes.
Take it down your local steam cleaning place and have a laugh when they open the bonnet ;)

What he said...
I tend also to use various engine cleaning sprays from Halfords and take Jeep for a run afterwards...

I would not clean it - a lot more chance of breaking omething.
If it annoys you wipe it down - but do not get a pressure washer in there

Been pressure washing engines clean for years, and never had a problems.
I prefer working on clean engines though rather than mud falling into holes where bits have been taken off.
Dunno wiping the worst of the mud off might add some extra mineral to keep the oil going longer ??

I've heard of a few sensors that have gone Fubar after an encounter with a pressure washer - it's where people squirt where they shouldn't.
If doing work on the engine then yes it needs cleaning up - if because it looks dirty then I would leave it.
Hose is a lot better - about 80 bar less ;)

alternators, starters, ECU's do not like pressure washers that a certainty
Jeeps do not tend to have any great issues with water but this can be a bad thing, because they dont cut out you keep going, best thing is just keep cleaning with a pressure washer to a minimum

Most things under the bonnet will tolerate some water, alternators etc... I pressure wash both my jeeps and leave them running a while after, the only problem I've had is condensation forming in the dizzy cap as I didn't run it for long enough after, of course a quick wipe with a dry cloth and happy days.
Once you get on top of the dirt it's easy to keep clean, I certainly wouldn't leave it dirty, mud will wreck stuff and of course you want it all of your inner wings etc.

Laning patches will only keep the desire at bay for a few days, get in the mud and enjoy the banter.
