This is an horrendous thing to have happened! Are you sure they were undone?
If they are alloy wheel nuts, then they are prone to undoing themselves! The only way to ensure they don't is to torque them to the correct level.
Don't be tempted to crank them as tight as you can, as that is just as bad as not doing them tight enough!

one time after taking my disco to a garage 2 of my wheels rattled loose  I lost around 5 nuts and the last few was on ther last thread. I now stand on the wheel brace and havent had a problem since.

No they were properly torqued down. I'm sure somebody loosened them, idiots whoever they are, anyone who knows us knows that my kids go in that car.

I've had this happen to me, they loosen the nuts first then wait to see if the car stays put long enough to bring in the gear they need to nick the wheels. If you know where it happened yo might find a stash of bricks nearby, my mate once found some in his hedge and 2 of his wheels loose.

Some low life sabotaged my Mini when I left it parked at work a couple of years ago. Luckily it was on one of the rear wheels, or I wouldn't be here now. Not a very nice experience.
With the Disco, I use a heavy duty wheelbrace, and stand on it. 17.5 stone of LSP tends to do them up just right.

"Some low life sabotaged my Mini"
Reminds me of a woman that works with my wife, she
"reversed her car off the drive and it sort of fell over" (her words)
some one had nicked a rear wheel. She will never live that one down.
