Vehicle Taxation from 1 May

Well, sadly it looks like the robbin' burglars (sorry government) have finally made up their minds about vehicle taxation. But they don't seem to have shouted about it like they did when they deferred the decision a few months back, even though it's going to be "slipped in" from 1 May this year!

So what are the key pieces of information?

1) Registration date? - was the vehicle registered before 23 March 2006?

2) Emissions? - are the CO2 emissions great than 225g/km?


How will it effect the Road Fund Licence?

If your vehicle emits more than 225g/km of CO2 (all new Landys bar the Freelander2 TD4 fall into this category), then if your vehicle was registered BEFORE 23 MARCH 2006, then your annual RFL will cost you £215 (£235 in 2010).

However, if your vehicle emits more than 225g/km of CO2 and was registered on 23 MARCH 2006 or later, then your annual RFL will be whopping £405 (£435 in 2010).

So they have moved the date to 2006 from 2001 which is a bit better - for me at least. Looks like they are hitting cars due for their first MOT. Still should be for cars registered from new though.

This is how it has always been :roll: all they have done is deferred the normal hike anyway. Good job mine was registered 9th March ;-) 23rd March 2006 was always the cut off for "supertax". Amusing how I pay £215 for my supercharged RR, but my mate will now have to pay £405 for his - even tho we both ordered at the same time  :shock:

My 2005 Freelander was (is) £210, would have been £300, and now looks like it'll be £235.  :?

My Freelander spends most of its time sitting on the driveway, producing lots of pollution (apparently). If only there was a way to get more tax from less economical vehicles based on the mileage they do - something like a tax on fuel would do it...  :doh:

Also, I am wanting to sorn 2 vehicles. both over 2litre engines and about 15years old. Is it worth me sorning them on may 2nd or will I not make any money out of the higher price? Will I just get back what I paid but divided by the number of months remaining?

  I,m sure there is a new ruling about sorning a car and asking for your refund, but I,m not entirely sure if I heard it right.
 My mate said something about how he wanted to change the month his tax came round, and he wanted to send it back for a months refund and retax it for six months (iirc) He was having to sorn it as it would not be taxed for a nano second or something and he would get a fine, then he said he couldn,t send his disc back for a refund if he was reapplying for it within a month....  

 Don,t quote me tho but i,m sure thats what he was fuming about.
 If they are changing rules on sorning, you would think they would put a notice in the renewal forms wouldn,t you?

luckily I'm not wanting to tax either of mine again in the near future. One car will be for sale soon hopefully and then the other will be for sale around september time I think.

Probably - may be a small increase as there usually is.

If your car was registered after 1 March 2001 the CO2 emissions will be shown on the V5C (logbook). Current models are on the VOSA web site (IIRC).

No change I can find on the commercial side, so a winne there.

You will only ever get back the amount you paid less the months used. If you have 6 months tax then there is an admin fee within that so its not divided by 6!

Regarding SORN, just get the forms to claim the tax back and make sure you tick the box to say SORN on the form. Make sure you send them in SEPARATE envelopes! I know it sounds aft, but the DVLA get confused with two things in the same envelope!

There has always been a clause in claiming the tax back that says you cannot re tax it within a month!

My TD5 is an Australian import, so had to be SVA'd 
As you can see below ( details from http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk ) the CO2 emissions are ZERO  :lol:

I realise that this price will probably change too, but I reckon not as much as if I had bought a UK model.
