Why do they all have freeview?
« on: April 13, 2009, 15:06:24 »
I've been looking around for a new TV for the sitting room as my current ones sound is fubar.

I already have Sky so there is no need for freeview etc, and I am looking about 32 inch screen size.

But here's the rub, THEY ALL COME WITH FREEVIEW!! WHY??? So many have sky these days that surely there must be an option for ne freeview??

Or am I missing something here? Is there an advantage to having freeview as well as Sky?

Freeview is the replacement for standard terrestrial, so therefore tellys will come with it as it will be the standard tuner thingumy :D

You could plug your old telly into a normal arial and recieve ITV/BBC yes?

Freeview is just the digital version of what your old telly could do with a few more channels.

That does make sense, but it looks to me that they are making so much of them coming with Freeview that it strikes me they are charging extra for it?

Analogue will be redundant in a couple or so years so you will need a digital tuner to view any sort of TV.

I might have more time for Freeview if those of us who haven't been able to (and still can't) get it since it started hadn't been paying the same TV Tax Licence Fee as those who get all the channels.

We are being forced to pay for services that we cannot get!

The tuner circuitry for Freeview really doesn't add much cost;  you can buy a totally separate set-top box with its own power supply etc for a few quid.  If you're really that upset about it, just buy one that doesn't.

My parents have digital satellite and, whilst there are something like 9000 channels, there are still only a handful of channels worth watching. And most of them are also on Freeview.

If you want to watch the BBC's digital channels and you don't have Freeview, DSat or cable then you can watch them all live online via the BBC iPlayer.

Digital satellite TV is more than just Sky - but that's what most people think of it as. There are BBC, ITV, Five, UKTV, Channel 4 and many more channels on satellite that have nothing to do with "Sky".

As for why new TVs have Freeview in them, it's because (as has already been said) old TVs had an analogue receiver - Freeview is used as the generic name for the digital equivalent. Some Panasonic TBs also support FreeSat.
Some say that this is just a random collection of letters, and that it can only be
understood by Top Gear's tame racing driver. All we know is, it's called The Sig.

I am seriously considering dumping any kind of TV receiver in my house. There is nothing but crap on most of the channels. If I watch anything, its usually on dvd. And not that kind of dvd either

OK, thanks for the comments guys

LSP, if I was on my own then i'd do away with the TV as well, but with a wife that loves her soaps and and 8 year old in the house I have no chance of getting rid!

Looks like a new TV will be winging its way soon, i'm tied into Sky plus for a bit yet, but I need to seriously look into what channels we watch and wether they are available on Freeview or freesat?

If a telly recieves no signal - analogue (about to be scrapped) or digital then surely it is just a monitor............

You dont need a monitor licence  :? :? :? :?

When you buy a telly it is repored to licence authority every time  ;) ;)

You do if you're watching telly through it, even through a computer - MythTV etc.  As soon as there is a tuner involved somewhere then you need a licence.  If it is JUST a monitor then you don't need a license, but staring at the desktop background is not normally a substitute for watching EastEnders.

Only if you're watching it as it is being broadcast: Watching a programme on the BBC's iPlayer doesn't require a TV licence, but watching BBC One 'live' through their web site does.

...but surely watching grass grow, paint dry etc. is more interesting than Eastenders?

What I meant was they dont ask you to fill in the licencing form when you buy it  ;) No freeview, no tuner (when analogue turns off.
My mrs bought me a freeview USB dongle and got a letter saying she had no licence  Its in my name  ;) but when I bought my pc/laptop ..... nothing  :D

Erm, that means you have a bad installation - rain should not effect your signal reception. Go give sky a kick in the rectal gland and get it re-positioned.
