Ford has no trained electricians

Thats what I was told at the ford dealers today when I asked if they could fit a 12s socket to the ranger.

It puts faith into you when they say things like that really. Like, it isnt as if modern cars have much electrics really that could go wrong.  ::) Do they just scrap any car with an electrical fault or something these days?

Also the chap seemed very shocked when I walked in with a piece of paper with the 5th gear mod and the date the bulletin was sent out to all ford dealers and even the mod number! Seeming as last week he said he hadn't ever heard of a ranger jump out of 5th gear before!

I'm not impressed so far. Lets hope they do the work I want them to do. I'm not paying £15 for a courtesy car again if they have balls'd it up!

whats a 12s socket, and whats this about jumping out of gear? you do have to wonder about some dealers, as the one we got ours from said "its got a class leading towing ability of 3 tonnes" and the day we went to pick it up he said "of course, nothings as good at towing as a landrover" well, make yer mind up...

What class is that leading if only able to tow up to 3000kg?

A 12S socket is a "12volt supplemental" socket that is generally used to supply power to "supplemental" circuits in a towed vehicle, usually a caravan!!! It has two 0V connections (one general and one specific to a fridge) and several power connections, usually Fridge power (only when ignition on), battery charging (only when ignition on), reversing light and general 12v supply.
This is different from your 12N socket (12volt Normal) which supplies the power for the indicators, brake lights, tail (and side, where fitted) lights, and rear fog light (if fitted) on your trailer/caravan.

James, ask at a caravan dealer most have guys that do the 12s thing all the time.  :D

I'm guessing that, until recently, Land Rover and Ford dealers went to the same school of incompetence.

It's only taken my dealer four weeks to replace a windscreen, and they "forgot" to do the MOT it was in for too.

well the dippy bloke today said to me that he thinks my ranger has had a hard life probably towing 2500kg trailers. I said yeah, it's max towing weight is 3000kg so no reason there to destroy gearbox! He then said he towed a 1600kg caravan behind a fiesta zetec once. It's all about how you use the gears. I so had to laugh when I got out the show room. There was a very strong smell or oh-de-bull-.....

yeah it jumps out of 5th gear. a recall thing that never got done.

prehaps he meant class leading when compared to the 2wd version as that can only tow 1600kg :D altough come to think of it an l200 can only tow 2700. it wont really matter as my dad can always borrow my mans truck for towing ;)
incidentaley ford subed out fitting our towbar which was about £240(is that reasnobale?) so maybe our dealer knows they dont know what theryre doing?

Most of them do that, and add their own mark-up on to the price. My (st|d)ealer was going to charge me £225 to put a tow bar on the Freelander whereas the local towing place charged me £130.

yeah i thought it would be something like that, but we needed the towbar the first day we had the truck, and knowing our luck, if we have had it done by the towing place something would have gone wrong and invalidated the warrany or something stupid  :twisted:

12s sockets used to be fairly simple - I think the specification calls for a couple of switched 12v feeds and a constant one? The problem is that new cars with all the electronics probably won't take kindly to you bolting a couple of relays in and running some wires to the back!

that is what I am worried about Matt. I only need the reversing lights and constant 12v pins really. But having all of them work on a car I own would be nice!

Ford has just excelled themselves today. Took the ranger in to Northampton branch this time. Very friendly lady behind the counter. Took my keys, got the paper work sorted and said, we wil call you tomorrow mr butler with what we find. At that point I asked, what about a courtesy car to get home. She said she has none and wont do for 3 weeks now.  :twisted: What would I like to do? Well, I wasnt walking home! Takes 45mins in a car! Nobody there could give me a lift, so I drove my own car home! That waisted some diesel. excellent. I love waisting diesel. feels so good to polute the atmoshpere with my gas guzzler and then re fill knowing that I am paying for some mp's sky tv or porn movie!

So I have come home steaming and right royally peeved off and just want rid of the problem. I cant be bothered to re book it today as 3 weeks time I am towing a caravan which I have been advised against doing. So thanks ford, you have now screwed up my weekend away too!

I think FORD stands for Find Our Rubbish Dealers!

Surely if someone drops off a vehicle then there is a reason they drive a car. Because they need 1!!!??? And with it being a comercial vehicle, they wouldneed it even more!?!?!?!? Please tell me I am wrong?

to tow the caravan or a courtesy car? lol. I am fine once I get home as I have the disco still with a full tank of diesel. it is just getting home when the start point is somewhere in Northampton and end point is middle of no where with rubbish bus'!!!

Horrah. I have just tried Banbury ford dealer and they have no courtesy car but instead they will come and collect the car from my house for me instead.  :dance: Now why couldnt the other 2 garages do that for me? They will even drop it off once it is all done too.
