Can someone tell me what the black thing is (not the pipe!), at the center of this picture?

It's leaking engine oil all over the drive/road. can it be fixed (new gasket?) or will it more likely need replacing?

I'm sure the mechanic chappy said something about it being some sort of pump, but I didn't pay enough attention :roll:

Yes they can leak - have you noticed any difference in the brake pedal, having to pump it to get decent pressure or anything?

First step would be to replace the gasket and see if that does any good, they can tend to fracture and split so replacement may be necessary - just over £100 for a new one  :shock:

Spooky :shock:  yes, not always but sometimes a second press is needed to get a decent feel (if you know what I mean  :lol: )

It's definately the break vacuum pump. Do they leak?

If mine was owt to go by - yes. It can dump most of the engines oil in about three miles if it gets too bad.

No, really.

The good news is that it isn't too hard to replace - a bit fiddly mind.
