Burnt rice pudding in my Jetboil - it wont go away
« on: May 29, 2009, 17:29:29 »
Put a tins worth of of creamed rice pudding into a jetboil cooking system and burnt it , it was horrendous tasting I can tell you.  Right now I am left with a burnt layer in bottom of the boiler and it won't shift. It's anodised alloy so do not want to use an abrasive - but it need a sand blaster I can tell you. Have scrubbed and scrubbed, hot water, soapy water, soaked it in vinegar, bi-carb soda and still left with this carbon layer.  I can scrap it with finger nail and get a black finger and it also taints the flavour of what ever I put in it now.

any suggestions ?

There are 2 things I would try, fill it with cola it eats most stuff other I use to clean my out door kit after expeditions is boiling water with a dish washed tablet desolved in it. Second one will eat hot fingurs as well, both will still need a nilon brush to scrub it. Good luck

cheers, 2nd person to suggest dishwasher tablet and boiling water and let stand over night so that's the first thing I am currently trying - do not want to waste my precious cokecola unnecessarily

any cider that comes in old milk bottles usually does the job, and if it doesn't work you can always drink it!

The dishwasher tab cleaned the rest of pot up nice and shiny but only managed to take an outside ring of mutant-pudding from the bottom, so might be worth repeating that. Had at with a wooden spoon and now on with the coke cola  [-o< and maybe raid a woozles road side scrumpy dispenser.

Along the same lines as a diswasher tablet... try using biological washing powder and boiling water.

I used to work with a chef who regularly used to burn porridge (in an old folks home...  :-> ) and he would add a scoop to the knackered pan, hot water and put on to boil for 10 mins or so.

Works a treat... but it has to be biological - non-bio just doesn't do it!

Coke cola did produce some result because when I emptied it out there was black bits floating around in it like tea leaves, but been too impatient to give that 24hours..not with other things to try...
So Iwas mooching under sink looking for biowashing powder as suggested and I spied a tub of.... CAUSTIC SODA  Now I remember full well what this stuff did to my diecast matchbox cars as kid so it probably doesn't bode well for anodised alloy pots..... erm anyway... teaspoon of it into the bottom of pot and boiling water added to start the fun. Left for 10 sec bubbling away and then quickly flood rinsed with cold water. Loads of the hell pudding stain came away. Repeated again 3 times, then more attacking it with the wooden spoon and the pot bottom is now shiny! Not exactly sure if it is still anodised down there anymore    .... but it's finally totally clean!   Cheers for all the tips.
