« on: June 10, 2009, 22:44:06 »
Hey up, its this old subject again.

How do i make a good looking, very cheap and functional snokel for my 200tdi Disco 1.

Also i need to try and get it sorted for next weekend (20th June).

be abit different on your disco from my series but , i got oil bath filter flexi pipe, standard size drain pipe and lots of plastic glue, matt savage sell mushroom tops seperatly which fit the drain pipe perfectly! all in all cost me about £40 which includes the £20 mushroom top. hope this helps.

cheers guys. with the drain pipe where is the best place to route it? pics would be a great help.

I have a lenth of that flexy pipe from a series 3 i was thinking of including that some where in the mix too.

I would love to bring the air intake up behind the cab as it is a pick up but this could be a future project once i get a bit of money together. With a baby on the way any day i am having to reallocate my spending hehehe, i am sure a few of you will understand what i mean.

If you take off the front passenger wing, theres, a lovely gap to run your drainpipe in.

You just trim the air filter intake, attach a 90 bend and then send it towards the bulkhead.

If your dont manage to build a snorkel, if you rotate the airbox by 180 degrees, it offers it slightly better protection

if you already have it as a truck then defenatly route it through the cab, not in harms way and looks cool.

if not then could i surgest flexi pipe of somesort for bends with a stainless tube going up the windscreen, nearly snapped the safari one off of my dads disco2 the otherday(shhhhhhh he doesnt know!  :-$ ) which is made from a high impact plastic, not really one to know but isnt drainpipe quite brittle and would have broken in that situation.

That is the thing i am worred about with the drain pipe.

What route would you take to go through the cab, i was looking and the only route i could see went right next to the turbo. now my thinking is that this would make the intercooler work harder. Also would it matter that the route is longer and there will be no ram effect.

I guess stainless pipe would be the best for this through cab route too.

I was thinking maybe to do the drain pipe for moment then get a new wing panel and route the air intake through the cab and put the air filter on the outside like i have seen on the Devon trucks.

first time i did it i used the airbox from a 300defender, think the disco 200 is very similar. then i ditched that and had the pipe come straight out of the turbo and have the filter on top. all made from 3" alli tube and sillicone hose, airflow isnt so bad atall.......with a snorkle it hasto go through 2 or 3 90* bends and a 45* very little difference with the thru cab snorkle. and is ram air what happens when offroad? never really going more than 20 and at that speed there isnt too much to say for ram air effect.

also rich, if its an offroad toy and its not likely to be nicked i would lose the rear window area! the cabs get hot, quick! and you can hear nothing from the outside.
worth ditching it just to allow you to hear instructions being shouted at you. just a thought.....

trouble is with loseing the back window, i do drive it around a bit and park it in town, on the Isle of Man it isnt too much of a worry but i have driven accross to a few events and going on hols. it is a opening side window from a 110 so when it does get warm i can open it to get a bit of ventulation.

Snokel through the cab looks good, like i said that could be a job for the future but might do the drain pipe snokel to get it done for now.

right done it, well i have bought the bits and started to work but just got rained off. used previously mentioned series 3 air flexy pipe to come from the airbox into the wing. trouble was that the angles i got were not quite right so they are going back to B&Q tommorow. need a slightly larger angled one that matches the angle of the windscreen. Any clues which one i need?

Just remember that every metre of pipe, every bend, gets in the way of sucking loads of air into the engine.  The air resistance of even the shortest snorkel will create 10 times the pressure drop that the so-called "ram air" effect creates pressure rise, ie the net drop being about 9 times.

Done, pics up now.

Even tested it and with my hand over the end of the snorkle the engine was about to stall and it had collapsed the top intercooler hose.

Cheers for all the help and advice, i will update once i do a snorkle up the back of the cab.

If you get som electrical cable , split it down one side and take out the copper leaving just the outer you can then fit it over the sharp metal where the tube exits the wing like this heres mine made from steel pipe with an ebay top ...

so many hills , so little time ....
