Exhaust and turbo
« on: June 12, 2009, 22:18:44 »
Right, me 300tdi disco has had a sudden loss of power!

Its been like it since i got the car back from MOT where it had parts of the exhaust removed to weld the chassis.

From inside the cab (with no carpets) you can hear a whooshing noise, like a turbo makes sucking in air, but its high pitched and really loud inside the cab.

And as said, there is no power, it just doesnt seem to have any go in it.

Also apparently the tailpipe on the exhaust is twisted slightly from where it was refitted, as when you start/stop the engine it bangs!

Will this be affecting the turbo is mainly me question, if not what could it be?

There is no smoke or anything coming out the back to suggest anything is knackered expensively!

Cheers

Dan

It was only 2 rear sections of exhaust removed as the welding was the rear chassis leg.

I agree, ubnless the exhaust is crushed somewhere you need to be looking for a split hose.

Mine did exactly the same thing the other year, turned out to be a split in the right angled hose coming directly off the turbo.

Stupid question time,

If i cant see any obvious holes or loose pipes or whatever, then what is the best method to test the system?

Haha ginger [ed: naughty]! lol

Right, did the exhaust blocking thingumy and couldnt see owt, could hear it escaping from somewhere but couldnt see it or feel it!

Although Maz did feel some air somewhere near where the intercooler is, where the top pipe goes to the thing above the exhaust manifold!  Could this be connected?

OK, well i changed 2 of the pipes today inbetween bits, and just taken it out for a drive!

It feels like the power is back, but i will find that out tomorrow, but its still whooshing??

The corner pipe that goes into the turbo had a tiny little split in it, but i dont know if it went through or not, i just saw it on the outside.
