Any Runners In The North Of England?

How about this race??

I've found a wonderful challenge to partake in

http://www.crossbayrun.org.uk/index.htm

If it had been a 10-miler, & not a half-marathon distance, I would definately be up for it!, as for as long as I can remember I've wanted to do one of 'Queens Guides' walks across the Bay*.

You just have to hope that the route has been correctly marked & the tide time-tables have been immaculately followed....................

I still fancy doing it though

It's also a good excuse to revisit Morecambe, & see how the restoration of the Midland Hotel went.
And, see if it's kickstarted the rest of the town (sadly it suffers from a bad case of 'faded glory')

*As you all undoubtedly know, there's a Byway that runs across the Bay too, giving legal vehicular access across the sands!

Frank Elson drove it (well before 'LRO' did it), for a feature in a magazine he was writing for in the mid-90's (International Off-Roader), needless to say he didn't use his own vehicle - the 110, known as 'PKV'
He accompanied a friend, in his 90, who also wanted to do the trip.
However, despite careful washing off after, Frank told me that 90's chassis was beyond help within a year or so of the trip!

I don't think I fancy it in my 110, as it's still too good to 'throw into the sea'

That looks mental! Running on that surface must make it more like a full marathon  :shock:

Doesn't look you have too many MC takers though Richard  :lol:

Not running/walking it though, not enough money in the world to make me walk that far! lol

True on both counts.

I've just run a 5-mile race this afternoon, & that was a bit of a grueller (with a long drag out of Wentbridge), & but finished in somewhere around 35 - 36 minutes.

The crossing of the River Kent on the Morecambe run must be grim, & imagine the blisters you'd get with the constant dousing/drying in the salt water :shock:

I've ran a couple of the 'Trunce' races down at Penistone since the '5-Miler' mentioned above, & they're a bit mental :lol:

http://undeadmonkey.org.uk/trunce/

My first one (race 6)was run in 'normal' (road) running shoes, & was almost dangerous descending in the woods, & crossing the River Don.
But, I managed (as a virgin-runner);
Overall = 113th/225
Vet40 = 51st/81
@ 37:04 (having started near the back)

The second one I entered (race 7), I'd made it a bit better by buying some 'fell-running shoes' & starting in the first three-rows :D
That gave me;
Overall = 54th/160
Vet40 = 21st/70
@ 32:56

A damned fine improvement in such a short time (if I say so myself!) :D :dance:

Mindst you, I don't look too happy about it, at the 2/3rds distance point :lol

Well, the big day is almost here.

It's this Sunday afternoon 8-[

If I'm (we're) not on the evening news (ie; 'Runners Rescued'), you know we've all completed it safely

My 'self-forecasted' time (I'll state it now) is under 1.45:00

I reckon I can run a 1.38:00 half-marathon on the road, but I'm allowing myself extra-time for the river-crossing/wet sands

Thanks, & we'd also get to see the statue?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/8006614.stm

We're stopping in Tewitfield overnight, then get 'bussed' from the finish to the start (Cark Airfield), having left the car at the finish (Hest Bank)
Afterwards, it'll be straight home (via Carnforth, Over Kellet, Arkholme, Kirkby Lonsdale, & thence down the A65 back to the West Riding)

Monday evening will see me running 'Trunce Race 8' :shock: (unless the legs are totally jiggered)

Well, I made it in one piece, if a bit wind-swept, as there was a damned awful 20MPH(?) head-wind for the last 6 (or so) miles :x

Joanne (SWMBO) decided against doing the 6-mile walk, so it was decided that (instead of getting the 'laid-on' transport) she'd accompany me to the start; wave me off & high-tail it back to the finish
(we went up in the XKR :D )

Once we'd got to the start-point, with over 90 minutes to the start!, the strength of the wind became apparant.

Click on pics to open/enlarge

She stayed there until we started (which allowed me to keep my training top on to the last 2 minutes)

Once onto the sand themselves, the first half-mile or so was awful! it was very soft & almost like running in a 'play-pit'.
Then we reached the firmer (if not dry) sand, with the constant movement of the Bay-Guides on their Quads, & the 'Search & Rescue' in their HaggLunds rattling past to the major river crossing.

http://www.baysearchandrescue.org.uk/ (watch the video-clip on the home-page)

Quite surprisingly, I found the pace over the first 5-6 miles fairly easy, my legs/breathing & heart-rate were all good (I felt better than I usually do running the 4 miles to work)
The sand varied in texture, from 'concrete', to rippled, to jelly at points

Then......... we could see the river crossing (Kent Channel) in the distance, intially we were running in ankle-deep water for about a 1/2mile approaching it.
On entering it, it was impossible to run, or even 'speed-walk' as it was about 400 yards wide & varying from knee-deep to 'crotch-depth' (hence very wet short-liners!)

From the 7 mile board, there was even more water then, as the sands were draining to another river & 3/4 mile was splashed through.
Up to this point, I was in about 25th-30th position, but started to fade slightly.

Then the head-wind hit us, as we turned south-east to 'shadow' the coast, that was nasty!!! - 6 solid miles into that 20MPH head-wind :evil:  :evil:

Another river crossing (Keer Channel), shallower this time, & only 100 yards wide

After what seemed like an eternity, the 12 mile sign appeared, & we were almost on the shore-line.

We left the beach at the point where the official road over the bay leaves the sands & then followed the fishermans track to the finish-line

Joanne made it back to Hest Bank just in time to see the first 3 approaching the line!, that's how far it is to drive around the Bay (including her using the M6 part of the way)

Looking over the Bay, we'd started out of the left hand side of the shot.

And then she started to see a 'yellow dot' staggering over the sands........

I'll admit that I didn't look at my best as I wandered back up to meet her :lol:

But, once I'd got my top back on, had a drink, blown my nose, I felt slightly better

My actual time was 1.42:52, giving me placings of Overall = 51st/237 & Male 40-45 = 11th/32 :D

I'm happy with that, as a 'virgin-halfer', especially given the wind & the river crossing

Now the 'question of the day' is?
Do I feel good enough to run a 'Trunce' (as mentioned in earlier postings) tonight? (@ 18:45)
