Viscous Fan 200tdi
« on: July 09, 2009, 17:15:54 »
The last 2 days, I have noticed that when driving my Landy hard (up hills) or sitting in traffic, its running hotter.

I know the weather is better and this will affect its running temp, however its ran with the gauge just inside of the white line for the last few years.
It still does if doing a nice steady 60mph but when pushed it goes almost to the Red.

I had a look at the Fan and it was spinning but I could stop it with my hand.
should I be able to stop this when the engine is running hot?

It has plenty of coolant and has no water in the oil, It does not seem down on power and starts fine. No back pressure in the head, so I don't think the head gasket has given up. I have a 500mile trip coming up and this will include some off road so I want to make sure its running ok before I go.

Ive had the same problem on my rrc 200tdi, take the grille off and i bet the radiator only gets hot half way,or whilst its running hot (mine at 65+mph on the motorway) put the heater on full and see if the temperature drops back to "normal" if so welcome to the world of blocked radiators with me! I tried holts 2 part rad flush,no good ! anyone got a good 200tdi rsd/oilcooler going cheap?

p.s not a good idea to stop the fan with your hand, get a neighbours or have you no children lol. Check the thermostat by running without it for the same run and see if it makes any difference, mine didnt

I think I will get a new Fan and flush the Rad as well.

If I back flush it with a hose it should clear any sludge !

Try to flush your heater out seperately mate as there is always a load of crud trapped in there aswell, (you will really notice the difference during the winter)

I rpelaced my fan hub and rad a couple fo years ago,now I notice that before the gauge rises above nromal the fan starts to make more noise as the viscous hub locks up, say if it's been sat in traffic.
