The government have deemed that I might have aged through no fault of my own in the x number of years since I first obtained my photo style driving license. It is against the law to not update my photograph so I have no choice but to pay the £20.00 fee for the privilege, what a rip off con tax. But it's not just £20.00 quid is it, I got to drive to town, pay parking fee, pay for the photo booth.

what the hell thats i ridiculous everyone ages as long as the photo looks liek you whats the problem :-k its just another way for the goverment to rip more money out our pockets

I had to renew my phtocard back November last year costing £19.00 (then ) and yes it is a pain with the hassle of going to get photo's too What gets me about it that the paper part is actually valid till your 70th birthday but you have to send it all back We are living in rip off britain

I had to do my photo licence and my passport at the same time cos both of them had to have the photo updated

the passport was a whopping 72 quid ! and i think it's gone up again since

I thought that there was a 0 charge if you were just updating your photo / name / address or adding extra vehicle licence thingys

There's a £20 charge if your replacing a lost licence, having endorsments removed.

There's upto a £90 charge if your getting your licence back after a drinking related ban

£50 if your applying for a new licence

Are you sure your paying just to have your photo updated?

Yeap, the stupid ID card licence expires so they can charge you for an new one yet they missed the whole point of doing it.

IUn the 'states you turn up for your retest (I think they should be compulsory here too), get your photo taken and your licence re-issued (provided you pass) so it cuts down on forgery etc.

If they can do it with my SU card, why not with my drigving licence?

AFAIK it's not an offence to have lost your licence either, perhaps the cheaper alternative then :-k

I don't know why people are complaining about it now - they've not made any secret about you having to replace the photo every ten years. It just happens that it's ten years since the photo licences were introduced.

A tip: they only charge the lowest fee, so if you're updating your address as well as your photo they will do it for free. I did this when I moved house a couple of years ago.

It isn't your driving entitlement that expires, just the licence.

As for moaning about the cost of driving in to town, parking, photo booth, fuel etc. well you're going to be in town some time, so do it at the same time. And the cost of a set of photos (I paid £6 last time I got some done) is nothing compared to a tank of fuel.

nope, you will get the charge of 20 quid for any update that includes a photograph. Change address its free... change address and want your photo changed too then its 20 quid, its all detailed on the form.
Well no, I do not go into town for months between visits thanks all the same. Anyway with my digital camera I have taken my own photo and printed it out to their specifications and my wife who works near the DVLA offices in bristol took the documents and fee in to them. The 6 quid for photos, the 2 quid for parking, and the what ever for a postage I saved I shall buy 10 litres of fuel.

I passed me test in 2003, and as such me photocard expires in 2013.

Now the missus who passed her test in 1996 doesnt have to re-do hers until 2016???

Its all on the license, and she hasnt replaced her photo in all that time?

Not worked that one out yet!

I am a self employed agency hgv driver and when you send your licence back for the photo renewal,get ripped off for £20 + £4 for the photo's and the fekkin stamp on the envelope theoretically i cannot work for the 15 days til my licence comes back as i am expected to have it on me at all times i am working. If i go into a new company for a days work they require my licence for a check,if i dont have it on me...goodbye..lose the shift! Now the worst bit is if i want to talk to the assholes at dvla i cant because it is now an automated system at PREMIUM RATE!!! Apparently the government thieves made £1.24million out of the phonecalls to DVLA last year. Rip off Britain..... you better believe it.

Propes, make a good coloured copy (or scan) of the license before sending it off, and make sure the agency keeps their license checks up to date. Any customer will understand it.

I have had to send my license away 3 times in the last 5 years (twice because we moved, once to add my C+E), and never had any problems with any customer.

well when i passed my test and got my original photo licence, it was valid until 2051 or something like that!! when i changed my address its now valid until 2014! which is only 7 years from when i changed the address!

Also, its not a "forced" charge. Its just a charge. Do you expect them to do it for free?? Am sure the plastic for the photocards isnt free, am sure the ink they use to print the thing out isnt free, am sure the printer itself wasnt free!!

Also its not an automated thing, so therefore someone has to be paid to do it. Then they send it out to you in the post which i am sure is also not free!!

when I updated my licence I got to choose the "use the photo off my passport" option, which is cool as it didn't cost me anything...

my passport renewal says I can use the photo off my driving licence ...

hmm, wonder if I can look 21 forever :?

If you dont pay the "charge/fee" whatever you want to call, it you will not get a replacement driving licence and then are breaking the law if you then drive. In my humble opinion you are FORCED to pay for a licence that you have already paid for when you first got it under the threat of a £1000 fine. I started with a paper licence over 25 years ago and never wanted a photo licence but was FORCED to after passing all the categories and having to change my licence so many times.As i stated in my last post RIP OFF BRITAIN!!!

I dont know what planet your on but i think we would all like to live there in the harmless bliss of ignorance!!!

The photocard license was introduced to assist in the prevention of crime, i.e. people using someone elses paper license claiming it was theres, as there was a black market for stolen licenses!!

Secondly i refer to my original comments. None of the time, materials or equipment is free to create these photocards so why the hell shouldnt you pay for it?

Thirdly you were not forced to upgrade to a photocard license, it was your choice, stop driving or obey the rules. I am sure the likes of LSP would have alot to say about the benefits of these photocards to the law enforcement officers in verifying identity etc.......

Fourthly no-one is forcing you to stay in this country and abide by its laws, so if you have that much of a problem with it go live somewhere else!!!

First of all threatening me is not the solution, if you threaten everyone who disagrees with you then that makes you a very small minded individual.

If you had bothered to read my original post, i said that maybe the £20 charge was too high for what it was, however i stand by my comments that we should pay for these things.
You would be the first to complain if your driving license was stolen, then inconvenienced by the police who arrested you for a crime that someone else had committed using your driving license (it has happened many many times). It doesnt matter how much funding the police get, they would still not be able to do things as quickly as they do now with the photocard licenses.

Also i do not roll over and let the government shaft me as you so put it. I disagree with alot of what the government does, however, i do agree with being charged for something that costs the government money for our benefit. And it is for our benefit.

I think that its now time to bring this debate to a close, no point in chucking insults at one another, everyone is entitled to their opinion and I think an "agree to differ" conclusion has been reached.

Please don't start another thread having a go at me for stopping the fight, just accept that having a heated exchange in public isn't doing anyone any good.
