Untaxed vehicle clamping?
« on: August 16, 2009, 20:16:21 »
Firstly, it's not mine!

Parking around my way is always at a premium and some neighbours seem intent on making it far more difficult than it need be  One woman in particular who lives by herself seems to still somehow end up with 3 or 4 vehicles parked directly outside her house, usually with another half a car length in between and woe betide anyone else that tries parking there as they normally get an earful about it being 'her' space (public road ). Well one of these vehicles (which incedently hasn't moved in the 4 months it has been there) we noticed was untaxed for quite some time. We being consciencous civil minded members of the community obviously reported it  and 3 days later I got a warm feeling inside when I came home to find big 'untaxed vehicle' stickers all over the windscreen and a nice big wheel clamp firmly in place

Next day the stickers have been ripped off leaving half of it behind but the clamp still there. Three days later and the clamp was gone but still no tax on display and DVLA vehicle check website data on the vehicle hasn't changed. Now a futher 3 days later and still no tax :-k

I believe that it was actually SORN'd despite being left on the road but I was under the impression that once clamped by the DVLA you had to get it taxed before it could be released and then also pay the release fees. So how has the clamp been removed without apparently taxing it? Surely no one would somehow remove it themselves knowing that more fines and a probable crushing was on it's way

I'm sorry if some people are offended by my actions but TOUGH I pay my taxes, insurance and have a valid MOT so my conscious is clear

I think another bout of civil minded action is needed ;)

I agree totally; one of my cars is SORN and its not on a public road.
I, like you pay my tax, insure and MOT my cars; and see no reason whatsoever anyone should have an un taxed vehicle on the road without being reported.

Hats off to you mate, well done and report her again

I would not be entirely surprised if they had mangled the clamp off in some way. Bear in mind that these people often seem to think that the law doesn't apply to them.

What always annoys me is how easy some seem to find it to slip through the net and get away without paying anything. I thought with everything computerised the DVLA would be able to spot untaxed/uninsured vehicles rapidly, and then investigate.

Insurance companies do not help though. For many 17 year olds the fine for driving without insurance would be less than the insurance premium, which is something of a kick in the teeth to those who do it right.

Might also be worth reporting the "earful" (which I'd class as threatening behaviour). That and untaxed vehicles may well point to individuals of whom the Police are well aware!

I would never report anything like that. I was realy strugling this time for my car tax mony and went a little over a week untaxed, some times you just cant help it when mony is tight. fair play to anyone who can get away with it for a while. who knows why the car is there maybe there is a complication in seling it or moving it

But those of us who pay our road tax and insurance are having to pay extra to cover for the untaxed and uninsured. It adds a noticeable amount to all our premiums (I've seen £30 quoted).

If you get hit by an uninsured driver then you immediately have a whole pile of hassle on top of your damaged car and possible injuries.

The police now have the powers to take the cars off the road, so if its not taxed, mot'd or insured then they will have it lifted there and then!

And so they should.

My 110 is sorn'd currently on the drive, its still insured as well!

talk to your local council (enviromental section) and police they both have the power to clamp and remove the vehicle, the same day, and as the clamp and stickers have been tampered with the person has commited an offence of criminal damage

im sure LSP will be along sortly to give you some police advice

If the owner had not already proved to be unsocial to the rest of the neighbours I would probably of turned a blind eye as long as it wasn't actually being driven. Also she has a perfectly good drive to park it on but chooses to leave it on the road in such a way that she manages to take up nearly 3 spaces with it.

Another neighbour reported a car today that had been parked up for nearly a fortnight and no one knew who it belongs to. Turns out it was stolen and the police came and removed it within a couple of hours. This seems to of got the attention of a few people and surprisingly there are a lot of spaces out there right now . Those lucky enough to have drives are using them and those who's boy racer sons park their pimped out fiats here because it is a nicer neighbourhood than his own (doesn't even live in the bloody village) have left the area ;)

I give it a week at best

I agree with DXMEDIA Driving without tax invalidates your insurance.  Imagine how you would feel if you hit someone -a genuine accident - and they had to sue you personally ? Would it ruin your life financially? I imagine it would

Phone the local Police, and tell them about it. If it is checked on the 'Magic Box' and found to be with the correct documents,  the car will be made into a nice compact box shaped lump!

It would be difficult to take up 3 spaces with that!

Some people seem to forget that driving is a privilege, not a right. If you want to drive, you need to play by the rules.

Around where I live the council has taken to putting in lots of disabled parking bays and I've no idea why - I can't remember when I last saw a car with a blue badge parked in one.

Thing is, you can request one from the council, and if you don't drive but don't want someone parking outside your house...  [-X

Those type of blue badge bays cost money as well.

I agree that untaxed or uninsured vehicles should not be on the road, if I can't afford the tax I put it on the drive and SORN it.

Then again I don't have much time for people who can't be bothered to use their drives either.  I know some pople don't have off road parking, that's a differnet issue but we have the same sort of problem, compnay cars that are abandoned in the street, despite having empty drives.

What's more annoying is they are probably insured on the bassis that they are kept on the driveway, not the road.

Anyway, if the car in question is not displaying a tax disk then it's worth another 'phone call.  Want to use my 'phone?

Never having been clamped I don't know if she has the option of taxing or removing the car.

We live on a footpath with a row of terraces either side. So the 2 opposing end terraces at the roadside are the only 2 lucky enough to have drives as well garages. Unfortunately I live at the opposite end and only have a green next to me  We all have garages at the rear of the properties down small private roads but the 110 won't fit and even if it did it would still never get in or out due to everyone parking infront of their garage because it is full of junk  Infact the focus regularly gets stuck because of this and I have to go get someone move their car. It does actually say on everyones deeds that they can not park out there but if I was to 'kick off' over this it would mean another 8 or more cars trying to park on the road ](*,) Besides we get on with the vast majority of them other than this one tax dodger, who doesn't seem to want to get on with anyone.

Another report has been filed so lets see what happens this time
