Top end noise 3.9v8
« on: August 23, 2009, 20:55:23 »
When first started up my v8 rattles from the top end sounds like lifters this only lasts for a few seconds till the oil pressure has built up once running its as normal. My only concern is that it hasn't  gradually  been getting worse but appeared one morning last week. I have changed the oil to a 15w40 mineral and fitted a genuine land rover filter as per normal. The engine has done about 113,000 is this something that i should be concerned about or is it just wear and tear cheers Tim

What oil did you have in before?
Did you use an oil flush?
Did thsi start as soon as you put new oil in or soon after?

What's happening is the oil is draining out of your lifter overnight, it then refills once the engine is running, it' snot a biggy other than one of your lifters leaks a bit.

I'd expect it if the engine stood a week or so but overnight is a bit quick.

Been there, done that and it made no difference.  The cam itself has the lobes ground slightly tapered so that the follower runs on one edge, this makes the followers spin.

At cranking speed once you have got the top of the engine off you can see the lifters running on the cam lobes, if they aren't spinning then the cam is worn, fitting new followers will make little difference if any.  You may also see discolouration on the cam lobes themselves and close inspection of the followers might shouw they have worn concave (if this has ahppened then new followers might make a slight difference until they too wear away).

The theory is that a follower which doesn't spin doesn't pick up enough oil to fully extend so the valve clearance can get too wide, hence the tapping.

That's what I'm told.
