Where did we go wrong? Should have been excellent education tool right from the start form its birth right through to the table, should be a celebration of the livestock cycle, and yes we are going to eat it at the end and give thanks for that. The brats might actually come away from school with the backbone of knowledge that their parents appear to lack.

This is thread is not intended as a trigger for a flame war or a soap box for vegetarian arguments and animal rights opinions.

Simple solution, she should buy all the raffle tickets and ask that she take the lamb/sheep home instead of it being slaughtered, if she has that much of a problem that is!

Kids need to know where the food comes from, not just out of a packet from Tesco!

Oh for heavens sake. Its a sheep, they are bred for two things - wool and meat. Surely this must be explained to the poor, spoilt, mollycoddled little babies at some point in their life?

According to the report I heard yesterday the kids were made well aware that the sheep weren't pets and would eventually be slaughtered. They were told this when the sheep arrived as lambs. If the parents don't like this then why didn't they object then?

Showing them that meat comes from animals rather than shrink-wrapped is an excellent idea. It doesn't seem to do any harm to children growing up on farms to know that the wee lambkins will eventually be chops, so what's the problem here?

The BBC report states that the School Council voted in favour of the slaughter, and that Council includes the pupils. Seems to me to be just one parent shouting her mouth and managing to get some publicity.
Ignore it, I bet she is getting plenty of flack locally.

If they were expecting the kids to stand there watching while the animals were slaughtered, I could understand. But just the fact that they are going to get the chop (sorry!) is no reason to bleat on about it (double sorry!).

What a good teacher! actually puts in the effort and has set up a little farm involving the kids, brilliant!

As a small holder I have no problem with the concept here and it does sound a bit like one person kicking up a fuss.

However I do think that its important to get the kids expectations correct all the way through this. I feel that (whilst its hard to generalize) there are two types of human>animal interaction human to "pet" and human to "livestock". The issue COULD be that the relationship they school children we allowed to form was too much "Pet" orientated and not more "Livestock" orientated. e.g. naming, petting, saying "ahh" etc. We don't really know as the media is the media, but thats the scope for error in my mind (if in fact any errors were made, which I doubt)

This way of thinking is interesting (to me) as it includes the "Why do we eat sheep but not horses" question, they do in france, they eat cats and dogs in other places. Issues of welfare/slaughter aside its the difference between a Pet relationship and Livestock relationship, whihc are all affected by culture, religion, and upbringing.

Now wheres my Airgun, I see Rabbits!

It's not normally the kids - it's the "do gooder" adults who cause the problems.

This is a school that many of my workmates Kids attend. They were made fully aware of what was going to happen. And no, the kids are obviously not going to see it.

As has been said, it is believed that it has all come from one or two complaints from less that desiarable Parents.

It is sad to think that they dont want their kids to know what happends, and that meat doesnt come from a Happy Meal.

Still. Lamb Chops anyone. :)

The bit that galls me... is that this isn't just a lesson on the food chain.... The kids have been given/accepted roles of responsibility as members of the school council. They have taken a democratic decision and I think taken it bravely. Yet one parent is too scared to let her child suffer a short term upset and help her to learn through it uses publicity to try and hijack the decision.

What lesson will this teach the kids at the school... indeed, all around the country?

Well done headmistress.... I hpe you don't get pressured by the powers that be into folding due to "adverse" publicity.

i have 2 sheep called mac and percy that wont be going to slaughter as i promised the lady that gave them to me that they wont. which is fine

However i am going to buy some more for breeding and if they are born with appendages then they wont be seeing there 1st birthday and the money will go to the charity i work for and who's land they graze - its all about teaching the kids that meat doesn't grow on supermarket shelfs and also what a real life farm animal looks, smells and feels like :lol:

The head mistress ( if I can still use that word in this oh so PC world that we are now in) should be commended.
Its about time that some reality was taught to youngsters.
O'Grady should back off and do what he does best, namely keeping the proles entertained.
I remember dealing with a guy who had moved from the 'smoke' out to deepest rural Norfolk and complained to the local beat officer (me) about the noise from the tractors, the dust from the wheat fields being harvested and the smell from the manure that was put on the fields.
After a long time of trying to reason with him, I lost it and told that if he didn't want to live with the reality of the countryside, then he best pack up his wax jacket, green hunter wellies and golden lab, dump them in the back of his nice clean 'Chelsea Tractor' and sod off back to the city, and leave the country to those who understood it.
He complained to my inspector, who told him that if he didn't want to live in the reality of the countryside..................

You get the idea.

was out driving with some kids today and one of them asked what the smell was - i said it was his aftershave :lol:

but in seriousness a farmer had been spreading - i explained this concept to the kids who thought it was disgusting i explained about nutrients and fertilization and how it makes use of the waste from the cattle shed, they commented "cant they put compost on like normal people" !!! they wouldn't believe me where compost comes from !!

the same kid asked if i was going to go round and pick up behind the sheep like you have to for dogs - i replied no and he offered to report me !!

i then explained that it was my field/private land and if the sheep wants to cr@p where it eats that's fine! - he still wasn't happy so i handed him a plastic bag and said if its that much of a problem to you I'm quite happy for you to poo pick a 2 acre field! - He shut up then :lol:
