V 8 ENGINE EXTRACTION ( PAINFUL !!!! )

Painful for me, as I am at work to-morrow, getting one out.
As some people may know, I sold my boss a '97 Disco 3.9 a few weeks ago.
He has now sold the engine, and I have the job of getting it out :( :(
As the car has been rolled, and there is no interior in it, would it be best to take the shell off the chassis and work from the top, or does any-one know an easy way ?
This is the main plan of attack, but any other suggestions would be more than welcome.
HELP :!: :!:
Cheers,
SPIKEY.

depends on what you wish to save as if the rest of it is getting scraped id get the burner out & whip the shell off as this will make it easer to split the engine from the box as im in the middle of doin 2 clutchs on discos & getting the bolts from underneath is a nightmare

if you removing the shell you can prety much start chopping where ever takes your fancy

I'd go for the shell off as well, makes it easier to play with the engine and box, most of the accessories can be unplugged, or unbolted quite easily, when ready set of forks in the window holes and up you go, like was said make sure the fuel tank/lines are safe or you could have nice pool of fuel on the floor

The Job is NEARLY done !
The Boss told me this morning that the Disco had to be CAREFULLY dismantled, and all parts saved.
All fluids drained, engine bay stripped, cooling and a/c rad out, a.b.s system out, engine loom out ( from inside the car ! ) , auto gearchange , hand brake and steering column dis-connected, and all the body mounts, fuel pipes and brake pipes.
No handbook, no cutting gear, never done a Disco before.
Result ?
1 body shell on the deck.
1 rolling chassis ready to have the engine removed !
Thanks go to my following friends :
1 - Compressor
2 - Impact sockets
3 - Patience
4 - Fork - lift
What a day , but I was determined to do it.
The bolts may be bigger but the car is a LOT LOT heavier than a normal family saloon !
Thanks for all the info.
Cheers,
SPIKEY. ( nothing damaged  )

The job is finished !!
Rear prop off.
Front prop off.
Exhaust downpipes un-bolted.
2 engine mounting bolts off.
2 gearbox mounting bolts off.
Gearbox cooler pipes and loom off.
Hey presto, when all the bellhousing bolts are out, the job is done.
I have learned something to-day;
I know why they build the rolling chassis c/w engine + box etc. and THEN drop the body shell on .
Cheers,
SPIKEY. ( Happy to have dismantled his first Disco by hand  )

HELP !!
Has any-one ever taken the torque converter off a 3.9 ?
Looking at it, the bolts can only be accessed through a hole in the backplate.
Tough bolts.
Mighty strong torqued up bolts.
I have spun the fly-wheel to different positions, but with the best will in the world cannot get any grip on the 13 mm bolts.
Extensions, small sockets, etc. ?????
I need to get the torque converter , fly-wheel and back plate off before Friday.
Any Ideas ??
Cheers,
SPIKEY. ( Looking through the Snap - On " Special " catalogue  )

You can get to them by taking the inspection cover (half moon) off the bottom of the bell housing, or by taking the starter motor out and working through that hole.
It's a fiddle :-(

Thanks for the reply Tim.
The engine is currently sitting on the deck, minus gearbox.
The inspection plate and starter are off.
The only way I can see is getting the sump off to get a socket on the bolt in a straight line.
HELP !
( this is a job where some-one comes along and says " You do it like this " - I hope !! )
Cheers,
SPIKEY.
