how rellevent is type approval to second hand cars? i.e. is the type approval negated when non-manufacturer parts or accessories are added to or even removed from a vehicle? is there a time limit for such restrictions? if there is a restriction which is then breached is an sva required? thinking in terms of copper not steel brake pipes, softer sport type brake pads in standard calipers, additional lights, oversized tyres, hd springs, removed antiroll bars, gas dampers, bull bars, etc.

mainly i ask as there seem to be increasing numbers of cases people being had up on defective vehicle charges even when the car in question is not broken but merely not as it left the factory certainly if insurance get involved even with mods declared.

so having said all that is there a way of finding the spec of a car as it was when type approval was given?

Type approval is simply a way of manufacturers getting vehicles onto the market. It defines certain criteria that they have to meet. It has no bearing on what happens to the vehicle after it is sent to the dealer.

The use of the vehicle on the road is covered by the Construction and Use Act which is entirely different to Type Approval!

For your own piece of mind, replacement parts should be of the same or better specification than the original. If any part proves to be substandard, it is the responsibility of the part manufacturer.

To take your example of copper/steel brake pipes. As long as the pressure rating of the pipe is the same as original, there is no issue. The copper and copper/nickel pipes are of greater wall thickness than steel, so they have the same rating.

the only thing that is being brought in to affect on type approval is Catalytic Converters fitted to vehicles built on or after 1st march 2001, they must be Type approved, and if a non type aproved cat is fitted and the vehicle has a check over by a VOSA Inspector not an MOT NT (nominated tester) and reported back to customer, then the fitter can be given a fine for it,

You can't remove anti roll bars froma vehicle - it is a MOT failure, and removing after a MOT will make the vehicle unfit for highway use.

Actually, Littlepow is right. At least on the MOT point.

If an anti-roll bar is standard fitment to a vehicle, it is a failure if not fitted. However, if it was an option it is not a failure.

Section 2.4, G2 of the MOT manual reads:

Method of inspection:
Check that an anti-roll bar is fitted to an axle on which it is standard.

Reason for rejection:
An anti-roll bar not fitted to an axle on which it is standard.

My manual is rather old, but it is rare for things to get 'downgraded'.

Strangely I don't know anyone who has failed for removing a roll bar and having an MOT (inc. myself)

Having bad bushes or joints, yeah that's a failure, but removing the bar is a quick fix.

Will go and av a chat with my mot mate to see if it has changed or not.

On Land Rovers and other 4x4s the ARB is an Optional Fittment so it doesnt matter if they are removed

i am currently reading all of the Lastest additions of the MOT tester books because in a months time i will be going on the MOT course to become a Nominated Tester, so i will be learning everything, if i do find any alterations to what i have read already then i will post up that there is a change,

Certainly, I removed the rear one off my old 110 and never had any MOT issues. I think it is often down to the individual NT as already pointed out. As I said, my manual is a rather old copy so I am perfectly open to being corrected :)

i second that.

Go speak to VOSA and they will tell you that to remove an item that is required to pass the basic standard, is an offence and you can be found guilty of making a vehicle unfit for prupose should you be involved in an accident. Which invalidates your insurance!

But if you think it's BS, by all means prove me and them wrong!


Anti roll bars are standard fit on discos - so you might want to go the route of unlocking versions like the Americans use.

after looking further at arb's disco's were type approved with and without them fitted so they cn be removed if you want to as the mounts were on both the have's and not's. apparently.

they were an optional extra on Discos, Yes they came out of the factory with them on and dealers sold them as standard fit
