« on: September 28, 2009, 18:30:21 »
Looking for a compact  digital camera for my mum - must be easy to get on with.

Looking around the £200 mark.

Any ideas welcomed!!

Cheers

I've got a Canon Ixus 80, which was £129 from John Lewis.

Superb camera, does video clips and very nice pictures. It's also got a steel case instead of plastic, and is pretty idiot-proof  I bought it because it's small enough to take everywhere with me, and with a standard USB socket you can just plug it in to any handy PC or Mac to drag the photos off. Battery life is a couple of days moderate use.

It's discontinued now, but you won't go far wrong with an Ixus.

HTH :)
Some say that this is just a random collection of letters, and that it can only be

Dont know wether its small enough, but the Olympus X-42 is pretty damned good for the £69.99 asking price!

We bought one at birthday bash and the picture quality was awesome!

I've been using a samsung nv10 for a couple of years - been in some hostile environments and has survived.
Got it cause it was small and 10mp - really easy to use.

2nd'd

Also try taking your mum into a camera shop - a propper one not a supermarket. Spend 1/2 an hour going through the different models and fine one which your mum is confortable with, can understand the menu's...    Any camera over about 7Mp is going to look as good as the next on a 6x4 photo, over A4 and the high Mp camera's come into their own.

If your looking for quality, go for a camera with the largest sensor as possible (that's physical size not Mp). More light, better picture.

If your mum is looking to get 'into' photography, then your just touching 2nd hand digital SLR prices at that. For rapid fire shots, a compact will never come close to an SLR - there's always that 1 - 2 second delay between pressing the button and the shutter going. SLR's can also take 3 - 7 shots per second.

Go to a shop though and have a word, they won't sell you the most expensive camera they can, they will probably give better advice than anyone on this forum unless they are a professional photographer.
