want to get a puppy for my girlfriend

its her birthday soon and baisically i have no idea on what to get her. after moving out of my dads house which was occupied by a big german sheperd my house seems bare and uneventfull and she misses walking a dog and has always liked rotties and husky type dogs.

so

im looking at getting her a dog. stuck between a mallamute, or a rotti i have no idea on what a pup costs these days. all i know is that 9 months ago when i was still working at the farm my boss had a litter of springers with a mental pedagree and could only get £150 for them! before the recession he thinks he would have got around £400 each


so yah back to the origional point does anyone have a rough idea on how much a rotti or a mallamute pup will be? or a good site with links.

Before recession you would be looking at £450 and upwards for registered dog with an average pedigree.

Now who knows.

Firstly you should be thinking about how long the pup would be left? A full grown dog shouldn't be left for more than about 4 hrs. a pup would need a lot more attention than that.

Will your life styles be able to change around its needs?  Remember you don't get bad dogs, just irresponsible owners.

Have you got the time and patience the pup would need? You will have to teach the dog how to behave in all instances, he won't know till you teach him.

Then if you know you can adapt your life for the dog, why not consider a rescue dog?  Try some of the rescue groups, check out Rottie rescue/welfare, GSD rescue etc or just try rescue kennels.

For instance check out the oldies club at  www.oldies.org.uk

There are loads of unwanted dogs through out the country looking for caring, understanding and loving homes.

Pups are only pups for a short period of time, even if they seem to make nice presents; remember they get bigger and need a lot of your time.

Oh and get it insured, my GSD has had no insurance and costs me in excess of £115 a month for medication, with standard vets bills on top of that, and will do for the rest of his life.

You could consider a kitten??

No offence intended mate just hope you thought all the problems through before purchasing a dog and then regretting it and having to then rehome it or worse taking it to a rescue kennels.

ive had two jack russels from the RSPCA. one was 6 years old and lived to 18 years old and the other was 6 months old and is now 12 years old. Small dogs are definately a lot less hssle than big dogs but can still do everything a large dog can. RSPCA is worth a look. We paid about £65 each for the dogs 12 years ago so quite a good saving from £450 for a pedigree

I speak from experience when I say that huskys and similar breeds are very one person dogs. IE: they will take to one person and that is it, no matter how many people live in the house. So be warned, it may take to your girlfriend or it may take to you and become "your" dog, not both of yours if you get what I mean.

Have you considered the cost of feeding a Rottie?? big as a horse and could eat one in 1 sitting :)the insurance will be sky high on a pooch like that -as for Jacks yappie little sods with the heart of a lion  tie the lead to your rotory washing line and thats the walk taken care of, seriously go for a Border collie super intelligent easy to train ,

My wife use to run a large rescue centre for over 10 yrs. and you cant help but get involved.

We have 2 dogs (had up to 10 at the same time) and a cat, but wouldnt have either if she was not at home all day to care for them.

There abit like terrier and a bit like a rotti but loads more loving and daft as brushes.Thet good on insurance and don't eat like horses.
There are pepole dogs and if you mix them from a pup with other dogs they will always get on great.
Don't belive what the prees say about them it's a load crap.
I'm sitting here on the floor with the staff sleeping next to me while my 20 month old boy is right next the her ASLEEP.
They turely are a wonderful breed.

ok first off thanks for all your replys....however a few points.




im aware of the trainging a dog needs as ive worked with gun dogs for about 9 years now, im well aware of how much it costs to keep a dog, it wouldnt be alone for more than 2 hours a day and i wouldnt think of buying her a dog if i knew she was unsure weather she wanted one or not.

we got slightly off topic,as i did specifically say mallamute, rotti or alsation. just needed to know the price of pups.
