What do you call it????
« on: April 03, 2005, 21:42:36 »
Okay I know I know the asnwer but I can't for the life of me remember what they're called. You know the things, they clip onto the edge of a sheet, have a hole one side and a threaded hold the other, so that you can screw\bolt something to the sheet, without access to the back.

I know what you mean... but I can't remember what it is called either !!

The captive nuts which hold the doors on a 90 (in the A-pillar) are very similar.

Hmm.. now, I thought that was one of the 'half-twist' fasteners where you fix a 'receiver' to the panel (with a bit of wire across the middle) and you then have a fixing which clips to it.   (This would be easier with pictures :-))

I'm with Tim, I think Zues is one of thos half turn jobs.

I've tried taking a few things apart to try and find one, and can't. So I've tried searching the web for a photo, but it would be easier if I knew what it was called

I thought that the nuts used on the A post were caged nuts, and the name of the ones in question were captive nuts.  And theres Panex ones that are quarter turn.  Take a look at the Fasteners/Fixings section of http://rswww.com

Last time I ordered some I asked for "those stupid little bent metal nut thingies that are used to hold the doors on"

then again, I've never been that good with descriptions

Tried flicking through the RS catalogue can't find them.

I thought Captive Nuts, were "welded" place, Caged Nuts clip onto a square hole (instead of onto the sheet), and Panex is another name for Zeus.

Captive refers to the fact that "you can not access once assembled" so caged nuts are captive as well as projection nuts (welded on) and pressed nuts  (pressed in a bit like rivits).

So are the ones in the pic, a sort of Captive Nut then?

According to Components Direct http://shop.comdir.co.uk/Products.aspx?intGroupID=918

The clip ones are U-Nuts and the threaded ones are LugNuts.

Neither of which are found on either RS or Screwfix!!!

Nothing from the UK suppliers under that name, I reckon these things haven't got name and we all call them something different.
