Oil cooler pipe replacement
« on: October 14, 2009, 18:54:35 »
Hi all,

Discovery 3.9 V8 auto 1996.

This motor has a leak from an oil cooler pipe.  I took it to a local garage who cleaned it all off underneath (ATF everywhere) and pointed out the pipe which is weeping.  It is the one which runs from the top rear near side of the rad, straight down and under the rad.

They quoted me 'two to three hours' to replace it and 'it's £60+vat from a dealer for the part'.

I went to my local dealer and I think the part required is an ESR3695 at about £23+VAT.

Now, is the garage trying a fast one with a huge mark up, or is it the wrong part?

Can I replace this pipe myself?   I'm not brill at DIY but if all it takes is to loosen two nuts and replace the pipe, then I could do that.

If I do do the job, anyone got any hints?

Cheers!

Thanks, but I don't mind buying the proper part, it's only £20-odd. I was more interested to know if it is a difficult job to do.

Thanks.  Do I need to worry about air locks with fitting the new pipe?

I'm told the oil is fed from the return and as such is low pressure, no need to worry about bleeding it.
