Another problem .. over heating

My Disco gets to normal temperature, about half way up the gauge very quickly, within about 2 miles, and on two recent short trips where i have used a dual carriageway the temperature has shot up to where i have had to pull over before it goes into the red.

I currently have no thermostat fitted, which seems even stranger that it get hot quickly, and due to issues with the heater matrix, this has been bypassed. On both occasions when it has over heated, when the filler bung is removed from the top of the thermostat housing, there is no water there. I am not losing water, the level constantly seems the same. The overheating has only started happening since the birthday bash, and i have thoroughly cleaned the rad of mud, but thermostat has been removed for about a year now. I checked over the weekend and once water is in the housing, its seems to be circulating ok, i.e. undo hoses or filler bungs and water comes out, including matrix bypass.

So, is this possibly a blocked radiator??

A can of petrol and a match is looking more inviting by the day  8-[

Do you have aircon?

Whilst I had hosed the matrix clean after Billing, when I stripped the intercooler out I also removed the radiator... there was a thick mat (about 1cm thick) of mud and weed type stuff twixt the aircon rad and the cooling rad.

Even though it looked clean, goodness knows how any air was actually passing through...

Stripped all down at weekend, cleaned and flushed radiator, and flushed all rest of cooling system. the problem, i believe was that the small return hose from the top of the thermostat housing to the header tank was completely blocked. Cleared it all out, topped all back up and all seems to be back to normal, running cooler, and a lot better.

by the colour of the stuff blocking the hose, i would say it was that leak repair stuff that did it that you used recently  :-.

I'll keep an eye on it but it wont fill anything as big as a hose
