AT Tyres on standard Disco - which ones??
« on: October 28, 2009, 09:22:18 »
Want to put soem AT's on my new 300tdi, it's total bog stadard at the minute and I want to keep it that way fot the time being, as I bought it as a tow vehicle.

However, I do want to do some green laning in it, so want to fit some AT's

What size can i fit on standard suspension and without doing any body mods?

Will probably be fitting some modulars to it too, but at the moment it's on standard alloys

Cheers

Standard size is 235/70 R16 - those won't need anything to be touched.

You can get 245/75 R16 on, but you will need to tweak the steering lock stops and trim a tiny bit of metal off where the rear wing folds in just behind the rear wheel. You won't notice that unless you're really looking for it, and the extra height is worth having.

Hi

I agree with the above.

I had 245/75/16's on my disco and it didn't actually need any triming. A mate runs Kumho KL71's in that size on his and hasn't had to trim his either.

I think BFG AT's are great, I run them on my Defender and they do everything I ask of them greenlaning etc.

I ran BFG ATs for three years or so, they were great tyres. I replaced them with Insa Turbo Dakars in the same size and really wish I hadn't - I had one blowout a few days after fitting (replaced by Paddock with no quibble) and another now has the tread delaminating from the carcass! I plan to investigate whether that is covered under either a guarantee or sale of goods legislation - the tyre hasn't been used above the speed rating or overloaded, and a reasonable person would expect a tyre to last for longer than eight months.

I am switching to Kumho KL71s in 245/75 R16 as soon as I can afford to do so, in the hope that they'll be a bit better made, quieter on the road, and better for rockcrawling stuff than the Dakars. I would go back to the BFGs but for the fact that I do occasionally need the extra grip in mud, it was slightly annoying having to say "I'll get through fine, but I can't tow them out".

If you do go for the BFGs (and they're the best all round Disco tyre) then it's probably worth buying the larger size, I don't think they're that much more and they'll give you a very useful boost for laning. My only problems with them came when I ran aground in deeper ruts.

Personal opinion I think BFG AT tyres are over rated. I swera by General Grabber AT2, they seem to be better on the road, and the tyre doesn't seem to move around on the rim like the BFGs did. They are also very good in the sticky stuff.

BFG AT.  If you want a tow barge then you need a tyre with a stiff sidewall, perhaps better to avoid the Good Year Wrangler from what I've heard then.

BFG is the most agressive of the common AT being a true 50/50 on/off road tyre.  Still quiet to run, good handling, great in the wet/snow/mud.

My LSE eats them because when new the tread can move around under hard cornering, don't drive like you stole it though and all should be well.

michelin xpc's, had a day at tong last week in the rain on their red routes with the odd black too and only had a quarter turn of wheel spin all day and then only on a 45deg ascent. size wise i have 750r16 with the only mod being to space out the rear wings to avoid the camel cut.

Another vote here for BFG 235/70's.  Had them on my D2 and they didn't let me down off or on road.  No issue with road noise either, and miles of road wear so work out as good value.

bfg vote here.

Had them on the disco and were excellent. Even towed huge cattering trailers accross muddy fields and I was the only one on bfg at's, everyone else was on muds and I kept up with them all in our duties.

They arent as good on the front of the ranger though but at a guess it will be down to it being 2wd. Couldnt fault them on the disco though and lasted years and years.

Hello guys, just to throw my H'penny in,
if you take a good look at the Grabber AT2's and the BFG AT's you'll see almost the same tyre,
BFG were that far ahead of the rest that Grabber have made a almost identical copy of the BFG AT.

I've ran a whole host of different tyres over the years on various LR's.
I found the Grabbers were very unstable when towing, wall-wobbling everywhere.
I also found that the BFG AT's were better then the BFG MT's in most greenlane situations,
All in all it is down to personal choice on the cosmetics 'coz the BFG AT & The Grabber AT2 are as good as each other on the greenlanes.
The BFG AT has the historical lead but you never get anywhere if you don't try new stuff!
Cheers,

Just to add a thoght regarding tyres. I had Insa Turbo Dakars on my 90, too agresive for green laning and every day use. Now run my 200TDI Disco on standard size Cooper ST,s , price and availability in standard size swayed it for me. Aparantly the Ausy army run there Landys  on Cooper STT,s.

I've run my Discovery for years on BFG AT's and they do everything I ask of them.  Towing, (Caravan, 5.3m Dive Boat & Trailer Including Launching in some pretty dire conditions), Green Laning, Snow/Ice, Sand, Mud, Grass, Wet & Dry Tarmac.

I fitted BFG AT 225/75 R16's rated at 115/112S Load Range E.

If you are towing regularly or tow heavy trailers etc go for the higher load range "E" rather than the previous load range "D". There isn't a huge price difference, if anything at all.

I would recommend BFG AT's everytime.

Good luck,

Mike.

Now there was a tyre, I believe that Insa Turbo are doing a remould version these days? But unless they are good for 100K then sod them

I had a set of Trac edge off a mate, he ran them for 40K then I ran them for 25K and sold them on with plenty useable tread. Great tyres

I've got the new Insa 'Traction Track' (copy of Trac Edge)on my V8 off-roader D1 in 265/75/16, superb tyres highly recommended and cheap too. Can't vouch for the wear rate though as it is only really used off road.

On my road going 300tdi I have just fitted 245/70/16 BFG AT's as they will last forever, tried AT2's in the past but the sidewalls are just too soft for my liking, very easily punctured and cornering is poor as they wobble.

I had a set of grabber AT2s on mine. I thought they were appalling. they were ok on dry roads, and grass but on wet roads EVEN the insa turbo saharas that replaced offered more grip, as well as on every other surface (yes- I know they are an MT) they were quickly well out of there depth on anything approaching wet mud. They also werent that much quieter- I would personally stump up the extra cash and get a set of BFG ATs (there was a set on one of the work vehicles I used to use- they were very good) OR a set of KL71s- which are impressive both on and of road!
