We've got three...

1gb Shuffle (1st gen) wired to a 5 speakers and a sub in the garage
1gb Shuffle (2nd gen) for general use
30gb Ipod Video wired to the head unit and 8 speakers and 2x10" subs in the Discovery.

Love 'em. You use itunes to create playlists/manage music. You can copy from existing CDs and import into itunes. Just recently, I bought a digitiser (a record player with a USB connection) which I am currently using to copy my old LPs to itunes.

Most tracks are 79p, some upto 99p. Albums vary - £8ish. I think you can download elsewhere but never done it.

I've used a couple of Ipod Touch - tidy kit.

Hope this helps.

It's all down to what he wants to store. I've got 3600 songs on 17gb. If he's storing videos he'll need much more.

So you can use all the music files on your pc that you already have and they dont have to be purchased through itunes?

You should be able to. Worst case scenario is you may need a converter - easily downloaded. It should be quicker being on PC already. When I started, mine were all on CD and it took ages to import them all.

I had ipod touch 32gb and loved it, did most of my internet work on it, need to be in wi fi area, loved it so much got the iphone and love that also, my 12yr old son nicked my ipod touch and he loves it, he copes well with it, the only thing he cant do is put films on it that are not purchased through itunes, consider downloading  free software Handbrake, then you can put most movies on, you can put any MP3 songs on just import them from your music files to itunes library, very easy to do, good luck, cheers Mark

I got an IPOD Touch 8gb I am using it right now to type this message, its great I tend to use it all the time for my MSN facebook ebay etc. it much easier then getting the laptop out. When I go out in my car i can just plug it in and play my music. I thought about getting a Iphone instead but I got  a company phone and its free so i didn't really want to carry around 2 phones especially when off roading I leave the touch in the gloovebox streaming my music and it great. The only down side is that it does not have blue tooth so i can connect to the internet through my phone or to my GPS to use it as a sat nav. You do need a wifi connection.
Thanks,

They are ace :D

8gig, save your money, no need for the extra memory if he's got a PC he can move music and films to.

Make sure that it's covered by some kind of insurance, they've long legs on them :(

Thanks for the info ! My son is 15 and has everything
Then don't spoil him by buying him an ipod touch! He should be earning the money to buy it himself by now - Buy him a tangerine and tell him how lucky he is to have such a unique present?

I would say to take a look at the Creative brand, ipods tend to be overpriced for what you get. I've not looked recently but I know when I bought mine back in 2003 the ipod was £30 more expensive and had a 10gb smaller hard disk.

Creative have been around for almost as long as Apple (remember the Soundblaster sound card in the early '90s?) and make some very good kit. They'll play any MP3s you give them and usually come with software to rip your existing CDs.

Got my second Ipod touch the other week, I absolutely love them. Had a gen1 which went everywhere with me, now have a 3rd gen, both 8 gig.. I can not see my self filling it with stuff I'd actually use so as long as you have a PC then just swap and change music to your current tastes. You can download music off the Ipod store and Itunes on your pc, the apps are awsome too, I have only bought 1 so far wich was guitar player, mastered that pretty well  But I have about 15-20 free apps and use them for everything, I even have on that has an accurate drawing of nuts and threads to determine what size bolts and thread are, In case you haddn't worked that out!.

Well worth the money I say. I got mine with £10 off panasonic in-ear headphones and a free £10 gift voucher for Argos as well!

I abuse mine pretty bad too, very strong. Not had one nicked but I imagine theydo have legs of their own, but that's what the passcode is for ;) Mines always either being dropped on the floor off my amp when practising or being used as a finger snowboard and is pretty awsome, well worth the cash!

EDIT: I forgot to mention they do suffer from bad battery life if you're constantly playing with apps etc, on the other hand, if it's on standby or just playing music, it's fine.

Problem with creative (the inventors of the portable mp3 player - Ive still a zen kicking about) is the horrific software which needed to be installed to get the music from the PC to the device.

apple really scored with the itunes - itunes library - iplayer package. It's a wonderful combination of hardware / software. Rember that the touch is more of a tablet PC than it is an mp3 player. The archos is about as close as any other device gets.

Yep, I remember that (have a 2003 Zen, still works but the headphone socket is a bit iffy). Newer ones don't need it though, they've adopted the same approach of just copying MP3 files to the device as other MP3 players.

Nar, I just compromise, XDA Orbit 11 with Copilot sat nav, memory map, 8gig card with lots of music and headphones and I can press ignore when the Mrs phones...sorted
I have to admit it does have a few funky free apps on it, but hey its just one lump in my pocket that actually sees some action
