300 tdi second alternator
« on: November 16, 2009, 14:11:33 »
I have been thinking of fitting a second alternator where the air con pump would be .
I found a kit onhttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-300TDI-2nd-Alternator-Bracket_W0QQitemZ260506105442QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3ca75fb662ebay.
My question is how do you wire to a single battery?Does it matter what output? and do you have to regulate what current is going to your battery?what size cables etc?
Any help would be greatful ,many thanks in advance.

you can upgrade from the standard 60 amp to a 100 amp alternator which would be an easier option.
i run 2 batteries thru a diode split charge box. the second battery runs the winch, stereo, inverter and roof lights.... works for me!!

I was going to upgrade the alternator to a 100 amp one ,and as I would have the old one to hand I thought I could use it.
It is my intension to have a split charging system at some point.I thought I could use the second alternator to charge the second battery at a later stage.
I have a 1kw inverter which I will be powering off the second battery.

The alternator uses the power of the engine to act as an generator to charge up the battery.
The standard on is about 60 amp,100 amp ones are available as an upgrade.
If you have spot lights, winches,cb radio etc they all draw current from the battery and can drain it quickly.

I might be wroing here but I think the 300 TDi uses the same alternator as the late hard dash RRC V8, which were available as 100 amp units for EAS/Airconn/heater screen/seats etc fully loaded SE spec cars.

I know the interim engine runs the P38 style alternator which have a reputation for letting go.

Defender 300TDI alternator is 65 Amp, Discovery 300 TDI alternator is 100 Amp.

If you want to fit an extra battery the easiest and cheapest option is to fit a split charge relay, unless you are running a winch the standard alternator will provide sufficient power.
