hi all, hoping to get some helpful advise, any one running or had one??getting fed up with swamping v8 dizzys and drying them out,,so ive got a series 2,fitted with above 2.8 non turbo engine, starts well & runs well, standard l/rover 4 speed box, supposedly fitted r/rover diffs, tyres are 265/75/16,,,,,needs a bit of work for mot, dilemma is i have a nice running disco 200tdi engine, but gearbox knackered up only yesterday.really could do with feedback as to how it should run as is and if i would gain much if anything by fitting the 200, making more work for myself and cash for fittings mounts parts ets etc,any useful thoughts/personal experiences very appreciated,,,,truck is not every day motor, intend occasional use ,,play days ,fun etc.cheers ,regards dave..

The Daihatsu engine was a popular conversion pre 200Tdi's and they seemed to go well, but once the 200's came the Daihatsu conversion seemed to go by the wayside.

hi,to be fair it looks like its been fitted a fair while, starts really easy,as long as you give it some glow plugs ,it fits in the bay nicely and there is room to work around it,you dont happen to know what power the 2.8 non turbo is,and what power the 200tdi is do you ?,bit awkward as because its got no mot i cant really give it a proper try...(limited time / cash to spend on it so trying to assess best way to go with )..all the best dave..

if it ain't broke don't fix it!! do you have the space to keep the 200 tdi if so, keep it for spare just in case the 2.8 goes pop. i didn't think it was a bad engine, definatly an improvement to the old 2.25 or 2.5 diesel landy motors. i think i read somewhere the 200 tdi minus the turbo (easier to fit in series) has about 85 bhp.

hi ,quick update, took it off road sunday ,supprised me how well it did ,although slow on road ,off road it did pretty well, broke rear diff though,so found out rear diff ratio 3.5,thats perhaps why its seems well high geared/low power engine/guttless on road,so gonna enjoy it for now and aim at putting 200tdi in ,when engine gives up or funds allow !!aim to fix it for whaddon on sunday for a play, anyone going ?????all the best dave..

im runing a 2.8 turbo diehatsu engine in a 109 fitted it in jan and its a lot beter than the old petrol i hd a 200tdi but the 2.8 was a easyer fit for me and it pulls as good as a 200tdi when it blows i may think about a tdi but untill them id recomend one i had a fourtrack with 180k on it and still going strong un touched and seen them with 250k on them. i get 60mph out of it nicely can maybe get 65-70 pushing it. i am runing 9.00 x 16 tyres though witch gear it up i know doing 60 now the speedo only reads 50  id leave it in

hi mate,a lot of people say good things about these 2.8s,the fact its already in ,if a decent priced turbo lump turned up it certainly would make me consider it,be a nice quick change over and a bit more power, wouldnt have to buy anything .all the best.

only thing you need to do when fitting a turbo one in place of a na is chop a lump out of the passenger footwell and wing suport as the turbo hits the footwell and u need a odd looking downpipe i made mine out of a few bends and welded them together works well but i havwnt done the rest of the systom yet still rining landy one witch ristrics it a bit its got more grunt and sounds better with just the down pipe on  so soon when i get a chance will make a biger bore s8 though syistom.

oh as for offroad now its just as good if not better but u do have to rember not to floor it as much as the extra power spins the wheels more and loses grp just fether it till u need to floor it and it will go most places i point it on the 9,00`s

Hi, Ive JUST FITTED A 200TDI TO MY SERIES 2A. IT took me two weekends to remove and fit. It was very easy to do and cost very little to prep. Aw-some engine.

I have had a Range rover with a 2.5 Diahatsu in then we swapped this for the 2.8 non turbo ( as the pump was playing up and it was cheaper to change the engine)
Its not the fastest off the mark but it would cruise at 70 and give 30mpg, the torque is excelent, and I would have another no problem, any 4x4 isnt ment to be fast and these engines are extreamly robust and very simple.

i've no idea about the Diahatsu engine, but my 88 has the 200Tdi in it along with 3.54 diffs and 7.50x16s...
first gear low ratio it'll crawl thru just about anything, took it to the pay and play just outside Wooten Wawen (can't remember the name of the place) 28th December and the only thing that stopped it was when i dropped it onto the gearbox crossmember and both axles in a pair of very deep ruts  second gear low ratio and i could spin the tyres up nicely when climbing over the banks to cut to the stiffer mud and keep my treads clear ...
cruises happily at 60-65mph and my brother has chased me at a shade over 75mph in his VW Passat, time to fit my overdrive i think
i've no idea of the actual mpg i get as i don't think about it, i just know it's lots better than i got out of the old 2.25 diesel that was in it when i bought it
