Off Road insurance??
« on: November 23, 2009, 22:04:45 »
Hey sorry for this really stupid question, but Ive seen a few folk ask about insurance policies that cover non comp off roading.

What does this actually cover? and do you need it?

Also seen a few folk use the NFU, do you need to live on a farm to get this? (sure i was refused on this basis before)

Many insurance companies don't insure for greenlaning, it's concidered to be a byway and not the highway. So make sure your insurance policy does.

Adrian Flux do,
Frank Pickles do,
NFU do.

Most of the bigger companies don't. It will be specified in your insurance docs that you can. If it's not, assume your not covered rather than assuming you are.

NUF, no you don't need to be a farmer. They will take trade from anyone. They will want to see an engineers report for any modifications though.

Don't confuse Greenlaning with Offroading!

Greenlaning is driving on byways etc that you need to conform to the road traffic act therefore any insurance company that tells you that they don't cover it are talking crap! My insurers tried it, I said "crap" They said oh OK!! and put it in writing for me.

Offroading is just that, you are driving on private land with the land owners permission, be it a pay and play site or a mates farm. It is very rare to get insurance for that.

I have it in writing from Adrian Flux on my insurance that they cover me for greenlanes and off roading on private land with land owners permission (pay and play), providing it is not a competition etc.

They are one of the few (if not the only?) companies to offer true off road cover. As you say, unless its a competition you're fine.

I think that they have only been doing it for a couple of years now?

I would personally check with the insurance company. There is a legal difference between a byway and a high way. If the insurance company can get out of paying, they will.

For sake of argument, the isuzu troopers owners club prefered insurance company (4x4 specialist) does NOT cover for green lanes. The make the distincation that a byway is not a high way. That's a 4x4 insurance company and a club scheme.

But under the Highways Act a "byway open to all traffic" is a highway, so can you explain how they can go "above the law"?

Nope, but when I was on the phone to a few companies a few years ago several said that they wouldn't, so I went to other companies who said that they would.

I personally wouldn't fancy getting in a legal battle with an insurance company if a claim had to be made.

Im guessing that this is a 3rd party cover? or does it cover you for damage to your landie.

Greenlaning cover doesnt mean much in scotland.

You dont need an engineers report to have a modified vehicle with NFU.
Mine is modified and i have no worries with my local NFU branch, they didnt even ask what some of the mods were for, it even reduced my premium as they assumed i would be in fields most of the time

I think they have just changed this, as if you fit the mods yourself they ask for an engineers report now.  This was what happened when i got the discovery insured with them, but because i didnt fit the mods and it had an mot on it then they let it go.

What is an 'engineers report' ? and who is 'qualified' to issue them?

I had this problem a few years ago with modified cars (performance not cheesy bodykits) but just ignored it and it went away.

I've never been asked for an engineers report and all my mods are declared with the NFU?

I got my insurance with Adrian flux which covers me for p+p days and greenlaning I have also got my breakdown cover with them, but when my breaks went at a pay and play site I was not covered with my breakdown insurance as I was off road and they would not come and get me. They said my breakdown does not cover me if I use my truck off road. I think if I was on the road just outside the pay and play they may have come and picked me up.
Thanks,

The term 'byway' also applies to many hard surfaced roads too. I'm sure the term 'green lane' is refering to soft surface roads, not specifically byways. It would be interesting to see what happened if someone made a claim for a crash on one of the UK's many hundreds (thousands?) of miles of hard surface byways.

As you rightly say, insurance companies will squirm out of a payout by any means. But I feel confident this clause could be contested.

After all, that's like saying 'we aren't going to insure you to drive on the M25'. They are exluding part of the UK's legal road system.
