Its happened again!!
«

Having a few pretty big problems with the disco. Its stopped starting. In the past few weeks ive had to repair someone elses poor job of fitting the wiring for the LPG conversion. At the time this was stopping it from starting now and then. Now since ive done that it wont start at all. Starter motors turning over but it wont fire. It was working fine once the repair was done but now its had to be abbandoned on a side street as it cut out in the middle of town and wont start again!
Has anyone any ideas? Its a 1993 3.5 V8.
Cheers Adam

Well ive had a look, it seems that the coil could be the cause. Getting a low resistance of about 7 Ohms in the second coil, the haynes manual suggets that it should be more like 2000-3000. Am i right in thinkimg this could be the cause? I'm getting 12v to both LT points.

Easy to check with a spare plug, you should see a fat blue spark if you rsst it on the engine and turn it over. Easy to check by fitting another though.

i had this problem on a 93 l reg 3.5 V8.i fitted a new coil which fixed it for afew days then tried another same roblem again i then(reluctantly)bought a coil from land rover(which cost a small fortune) and then had no more problems so it sounds to me like you may have the same issue.dont know for sure but may be some help.good luck!

Finally got round to replacing the coil. Found that the capaitor attached between the +15 and earth had rusted away. Looks like that may have caused the problem but now ive got a new coil theyll both be changed. Just got to wait till some daylight tomorrow to finish the job.

Finally got it fixed after three weeks abandoned in the village. Turns out that it was just a £3.15 capacitor that caused all the problems.

Well theres no spark :(
Looks like the CHEAP coil is no good. Should have bit the bullit and payed a small fortune to LR to get a genuine one. Ah well lesson learned!
Another week of snow predicted and the disco will be off the road again! Looks like Im going to have to [pussy cat] foot around once again in the focus...boo!!

The capacitor on the coil is so that you can hear the radio, you shouldn't need it.
Are you on electricery dizzy?
My advice would be never assume that because you've replaced it it's fixed, check all the bits you have fitted.

The dizzy and leads were replaced by the previous owner, it was working ok apart from electrics on the gas being scotch connectors. The coil went, and on replacing this i found the capacitor on the coil had rotted, replaced that too. Its lasted around 6 starts then its gone again... no spark. So the only thing i can think of its the coil again, i only replaced it with a CHEAP £25 coil. Maybe I need to spend a little more on a coil!
