i think leagaly the spar wheel has to be the same diamiter as the others
ie you could have 235 85s  but a 750 16 spare

If you've a centre diff then really you need both axles to have the same size tyre on. If you've not got a centre diff, then put the odd size tyre on the front (2wd) and nurse it home. The front diff / unlocked hubs will let the smaller wheel work.

Nurse home though - you'll probably be the other side of the law.

I was thinking it may cause damage but wasent sure if the diff would compensate for the difrence or not. dont think that law is strictly true though about size, I have seen new up to date cars with tiny little red spare wheels

Height is the same, but width is different. They are also limited on speed.  back to that emergency v normal use thang.

You will be fine.   Its no differen to a space saver spare that most modern cars come with.
In fact, if you do have a centre diff like every landrover other than series models then it wont make any difference to it provided it is not locked.
It will just be like the car is driving round a corner all the time.
I run 35" tyres and had to use a 32" as a spare once, no worries with it at all, just be careful when you brake or accelerate as the tyres will behave differently.
Other than that, there are no worries at all

For the cost of less than a tank of fuel is it worth messing around?

Careful.... some wrong info being provided.....

A space saver is a specific 'get you home' device and has speed limits set. That's why it is a bright colour, so plod can spot it a mile away if you are doing 60mph down the motorway.

If you carry a spare otherwise, it has to be of the same type and size as the road wheels to be legal. So you cannot use a radials on the road and have a cross ply as a spare, for example.

However, in reality, if you have a different tyre as a spare and need to get home with it, as long as you drive sensibly, you are unlikely to have a problem. But..... technically, you can be nicked for it if they've had a bad morning!

??? What

It looks from you pic that your running 29 or 30 in tyres. You can get a new tyre of that size for about £50. That's less then a tank of fuel.  You can get 33's for under a ton - brand new not remould.

For the price of a tank of fuel (which is what £80?)  you can sort yourself out with a spare of the correct size.

I'm not saying get a brand new ££££ money tyre, but get a spare which is the same size, remould or what ever.

Its an old pic, i run maxxis creepy crawlers in 35/12.5/15 which including a new rim which i would need comes in at just under 200 notes!
Plus my fuel tank only costs 50 to fill up.

Very true about the colour steve but i have never had an issue, even when stopped with a smaller spare on and asked why it was smaller, he just wondered why it was  abit smaller than the other 3

Yes, it is highly unlikely to be a problem as long as you are being sensible in your driving.

The other thing to remember if you carry a different size spare is to remove it before your MOT. The same rules apply for the test. So if there is a spare, it should be of the same type/size as the rest.

I also have a slightly smaller spare and was worried about it for the MOT but was told that the spare doesn't come into it as you don't legally need one. Thought it would be one of those 'if it's there they'll test it' things so decided that I would remove it for the test. But after a weeks worth of late nights doing all the welding and other little jobs I completely forgot about it untill half way through the test  But when it came back out I could tell that the wheel cover had never even been removed :-k It did actually fail the first test but this was on a small hole in the chassis, nothinf to do with spare, it didn't even get an advisory.

I do keep meaning to replace it with the correct size tyre but I think the rim wheel need replacing too as it is a standard LR solid rim and I'm running on 235/85 BFG AT's

So if anyone localy has an old 235/85 on a rim that is good enough for a spare................ ;)

I run 265/75/16s on my disco and the spare is still the standard disco wheel from when i purchased it. It has been through 4 MOT's like this and never mentioned, i will add though that the cover has never been touched on the spare during the MOT's as far as i can see.

It was interesting to see this thread, as i just have never got round to getting a spare the same size, and always thought that a spare of the wrong size would be better than none if ever i got a flat  [-o<

Dont even carry a spare now.  I have a direct line to one of the best mobile tyre fitters in norfolk if i cant fix the puncture myself lol

And yes suvvey, i have a 235/86/16 bfg trac edge that you could have for a spare, it even comes with a black landrover rim.

I can bring it on sunday if you are going

There's still the minor point that it's illegal having mixed sizes on the same axle.

Insurance will be invalidated

£2500 fine isn't it? It's way more than the 60 for bald tyres.

Braking and steering will be impared, the smaller wheel wanting to stop a LOT faster than the larger one.

A can of the instant tyre repair stuff is genius, and if the tyre is that bad that it can't be sealed, then flash that aa card.

Saying that, isn't recovery membership now cheaper than a spare tyre?

brand new extreme mud and a legal but very worn road tyre of same size written on sidewall... could be a difference of close to an inch, makes a mockery of law about different sizes.

Well surley then a space saver tyre is illegal to use as it is normally smaller size.
I know it is specific to the use but surley that is irrelivent as it is still a smaller tyre

Have a look on google. Emergency spares are for that use, to get you to a tyre repair place. They are plastered with warnings, limited on speed, and have the same diameter as the stock tyres, They are only narrower cus the manufacturers are cheapscates and claim a normal spare won't fit in the wheel we they take up less space in the boot.

Google it, it's not like you'll come across the .gov details on tyre size and mixing radial and cross ply within about 10 seconds.

Its clearly not illegal

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/210916/spare_wheels.html

the fact that my disco bearly goes over 45 why would this be a problem. sure a heavy duty mud tyre would cope with more greef than that little wheel

I was only asking for emergencey last resorts sake

Sorry - that link is specifically for space saving emergency tyres as provided by OEM. They are marked temporary use and are limited to 50mph.

Fitting 2 different size tyres on the same axle is illegal, unless it's the emergency tyres (which is the same rolling cirumfrance as the standard tyres supplied by OME).

Cars that come with space savers have been tested and homologated with them on, so they are legal.  You may notice though that they only have 1.6mm of tread when new!

To use a different size of tyre I'm not sure, I think they have to be the same size across the axle.  What they have to be is the same width.

If you are unsafe, that in itself is an offence.
