Help with Overheating problems!

Hi all i have a 300tdi 90 last week the car overheated on m1 with a horse in back of trailer  any way to cut a long story short the engine was cooked! so got another engine put it in at weekend, with new radiator, water pump, thermostat, and all new coolant etc, we have check for airlocks and she is still over heating, it only does it under load (ie with trailer or hard driving) we also checked the rad and that is stone cold after hard driving, are we missing something? we cant find any leaks and we have normal heat into cab, any help would be really appricated and we are stuck!

was it really a brand new rad? because if internally block they stay stone cold liek you describe and if engine needs to use rad (up hill etc) it cooks instead.

Yes it was a brand new rad we were told that you can get cheaper crappy ones, so we got a half sharp one and paid extra money!, this is what i dont understand to me it sounds like air lock not circulating and doesnt seem to pressurise either but no leaks and have check for air locks!

Yes i can asume so, it is out of a 300tdi disco, i cant say its the lump as it was doing the exact same with last engine and old rad! its really strange :?

oh poop I think i know what it is LOL  its not over heating... you got the disco temp sender in engine block .... it will read all to cock... you  need to put the defender sender in. One is green capped and one is black. But the defender one in and you temp gauge will be normal :D Same as what mine was like after def/disco 300tdi swap over - scared me to death at the time  :oops: fingers crossed its this simple

i got all excited then but then realised when we fitted new engine we switched the senders as we have been told they are different! sorry forgot to mention that,  :doh:

Is the water pump working? I've heard of them coming off before now.  Also check that the viscous fan is working correctly and the blades go the right way :-k

is your intercooler in good condition because one in poor condition can cause overheating under load

run it without a thermostat, should cure any trapped air issues,

took the stat out today run it a few junctions down the a14 didnt boil stayed way under normal op temp :D :D that was flat to the mat all the way!! going to main dealer 2moro to try genuine stat see if i can get one at 82c as all ive had is 88c stats but all been aftermarket QH jobbies see what they have to say and maybe pry some info out of there fitters never know they might turn round and say try this you plank then it'll be fine  :oops:

You may well just have a duff stat,put it in a pre heated glass add boiling water and watch it open,if it dont you know the answer!

Happy New Year and thank you for everyones advice we really appricate it :P
we tried that mate with our old stat and didnt open till boiling point  :-o
got a nice new genuine one thanks to rockingham landrovers!  :D
we have this new "p" gasket to try and head gaskets etc, cant do no harm, gonna start rebuilding the orginal engine again now  :roll: so fingers crossed  :D
always have a spare! especially as we are selling her to someone close  :D
