Defenders with full tilts
« on: December 23, 2009, 12:04:48 »
Yesterday I saw a N reg (1996ish) Defender 90, with a full tilt.  I didn't know they made these at that age, I've only ever seen ex-MOD ones from the 1980s.

Are all full tilt 90s ex-MOD?  I've always fancied one.......

Nope, look at exmoor trim or all wheel trim and you can buy hoodsticks and hood for any defender

Any Defender?  Really?  So you can take the top of any 90 (can you do 110s as well?) and stick sticks on it?

Yes, any defender can be turned into a soft top with minimal effort.
The exmoor trim and all wheel trim parts are a bit pricey tho  8-[

Biggest problem is that many 90/110 lower tubs don't have the cleats to attach the ropes and most replacement crossmembers don't have the ring hinges for the dropdown tailgates. So not just a case of buying a tilt and throwing ir straight on.

But you can buy the cleats from either of the shops i have mentioned, or any bearmach dealer or even a stealer.
They are not expensive and only take a few mins to rivit onto the body

I didn't say it couldn't be done I jus sid it's not as easy as simply buying the canvas and hoops. fitting tailgate rings requires the use of a welder as well as drilling the tub to take the antiluce pins for the tailgate restraints.

Take a set of hinges and put them on a tailgate (bought one from ebay for 99p). Add padlock and hasp for a quick lock and away you go.

Alternately buy a cheap 2nd hand safari door (£10 from ebay) and cut it away below the window. Edge the sharp top with some u channel to smarten it up.

The crossmember I cut off had steel rings welded to the crossmember for the tailgate The replacement crossmember didn't have the rings on it.

From the defender onwards, the rings were only bolted on on the Ex MOD ones anyway. This is still the case on the Wolf (I know as I have two of them). I will be taking a pair off of my wolf and selling them on with my tailgate as I am converting my wolf to hard top. Let me know if you are interested.

Got hard top fitted so not required Cheers. Mine is an 87 90TD. so that would explain the welded rings.
