it's just an entertaining show - if they wanted they could produce it in such a way where it would be less obvious that it was staged but they do not  - by design it is made blatant.  Maybe it's so that we can all go 'well yeah derr' to the wannabie whistler blower in the pub or net forums.

Wannabe Whistle blower moment...That one where James May is in that caravan airship it was all staged!  The police copter was a fake and rented for the show as per script, James may wasn't alone in the aircraft as a professional flew during difficult manoeuvres, there was no emergency in airport airspace - it did crash but under controlled conditions and so on - but it was still fun it was to watch.

Good that they make rangerover win. Maybe if clarkson had been kinder to Rover Group it might still exist along with other british car companies (not they really deserve it).

Seriously, its a tv show admittedly i love it but its got as much foundation in the real world as the tooth fairy. Its entertainment and an excuse for clarkson et al to have a bloody great time get paid a bloody fortune at licence payers expense and i want his job. Do you really think the bbc would let him hand his a*se off that sheer drop!! insurance and h&s men would have blown a gasket.Good of him to b*gger off and leave hamster and slow to their own devices thats what us good rangey drivers do the best ha ha. If you had just bought a bugatti veyron would you try to blow it up on a race track.........i think not! Give me their jobs,id even do it for less.
Polish the towel of life to reflect the acidic doorstop! Big brother is watching he drives a freelander.....You have been warned!!!!!

Can someone explain to me how the Rangie is supposed to be the most unreliable car in the world? Clarkson clearly never drove my Renault 11.....

If it was not staged that must be one of the best back village 4x4 spares shop to have full roll cages for a range rover, land crusier and sj. plus springs shocks extended brake lines etc.
Still great fun to watch.

Good that they make rangerover win. Maybe if clarkson had been kinder to Rover Group it might still exist along with other british car companies (not they really deserve it).

You can't really blame Clarkson for that. BMC/BL/Rover destroyed themselves by churning out nasty vehicles that nobody wanted and taking profits from models that sold (like the Rangie) to prop up other parts of the business. It damn near killed LR too - think about all the canned projects like the diesel V8. Because their profits were being used to fund loss-making vehicular disasters they were effectively fighting the Japanese 4x4 manufacturers with both hands tied. Clarkson and the rest of the motoring press merely pointed out that there were better cars for the money.

I'd love an SD1 Vitesse or a Jag XJS, but only after they'd been professionally restored to turn them into the cars their designers intended rather than the fault-ridden horrors the assembly lines produced!

fake as in it was not a police copter on duty,  was hired and not attending an emergency.

The newspaper quotes went along the lines of
Quote
The show’s producers had got airport clearance to stage the scene while a private helicopter firm provided the "police" chopper.
Steve O'Brian, Chief Pilot at Sterling helicopters, who supplied the 999 helicopter said the balloon was delivered to the airport on the back of a truck.

At parents house. Just watched this on BBC i-player.

Yeh, very good, and yeh, staged.

Good fun though!
Would've been better if they'd had a Porshe Cayenne, Audi Allroad, and Merc M-Class, and bringing up the rear, a Range Rover Classic, (as per the VW Beetle, in the South African Challenge), to show how banal those Chelsea Tractors are.

I'm off to watch it again, Cheers.

Although it was fun, I thought the North Pole one was better.

It's obviously all staged, but it is just entertainment. I very much doubt (hope) the production team expect anyone to think otherwise.

Arctic one seemed genuinely more extreme. Maybe if they had all used 2CV's in the jungle...
