When I try to turn off my water supply what I think is the stopcock, nothing happens - cold water still flows at same pressure. It's a 1/2inch tap affair under the kitchen skin. Is it possible for those taps still turn and yet totally fail to valve the flow?  Does this mean I got to turn off the water in the street to change this tap or do those pipe freeze things work?

it could be the stop tap for a outside tap if on half inch

 Hi there, we have a inline stopcock/tap, which tyrns fine but the internals are seperated, meaning you can turn it allday long with no effect  :doh:

 As for freezing, I have used it for a radiater swap, and it worked fine, but has a very fine window of use  :shock:
  Not sure what pressure it would hold  8-[  :lol:

  I would bite th ebullet n turn off outside and check/replace the tap

I'll get new tap - ptfe tape - borrow the tap key thing from one of the neighbours and get him to show me where it is outside (he's 98 years old bless him) and he'll tell me which houses I need to put notes through door hopefully.

All I wanted to do was swap out our broken shower  and it turns into drama :lol:

I've used the freezing thing and it was fine.  I must admit I really didn't think it was going to work but hell fire it did the job, mains water pressure for plenty of time to add a couple of stop taps under the sink.

I'd replace the cranky old tap with a 90 degree ball valve, they are self-cleaning unlike gate valves which are self-contaminating and allow better water flow than the "tap" type valves, whatever they are called, the ones you turn for ages hoping something is happening.

I have only got about 3 inch of pipe sticking up out of kitchen floor screed - you think that is enough for the ice blaster?

Hmmm, I think the sleeve is more than 3" so I wouldn't like to say.  I take it when you say screed we're talking concrete?

However, you can still use the freezer to fit a shower.

As a bodgey repair you could add a second isolater more than 3" above the floor.

hmmm that's an idea.. won't have to touch that tap to fit the shower... sounds good to me (cheers!).  Will get the freezer kit and see what's what.

If you freeze the pipe and put another tap higher up, leave the old one there, then you can turn water off in case of a leak  ;) ;) unless you are buying the pipe freezer of course

tap got written on it 1/2" and it's about 80mm between couplings. But I can't find ANY 1/2inch in BnQ, Wicks etc

Nearest is 15mm 

Can't fit another one above it because it tee's off  pretty much immediately.

Anyway - used one of those froze can kit to block the pipe that tee's off upstairs. Fitted the shower... and 62 minutes later STILL waiting for the thaw to see if install is water tight  :lol:

IIRC 1/2 inch pipe is 1/2" ID and is roughly 15mm.

Would explain things. I'll get one of them 15mm taps or ball valve and hope the fittings are same thread as I do not want to soldering olives and the likes (or are they compression?) . There is enough room below tap to fit the freezer jacket (don't know why I thought only 3 inch it's more like 7).  Was nice to have a hot shower last night  :clap:, that freeze block lasted near enough 2 hours!

Based on personal experiance id have a back up plan! (Basically be able to turn it off in the street)

I was changing a stopcock on my house and the pipe joint later un snapped (came off in my hand, no force, old house, crap plumbing). Also there are other thigns that could happen, limited clearance, faulty fitting  and you dont want to have your freeze spary run out and have not got a water tight system!

Just my experiance, but im Mr Belt and Braces (also freeze spray is expensive, but outdoor stopcock is free!)

1/2" imperial won't fit 15mm metric thought you can get a metric/imperial compression fitting to join the 2. Olives are compression fit not soldered.
