need help with coolant leak
« on: January 06, 2010, 00:40:52 »
hi guys,
I have a 200tdi (thought it was a 300tdi when I brought it, but transpires it's had a engine change to a 200tdi) anyway, no idea how many miles its done but thats probably imaterial.
I started losing coolant, thought it might be a head gasket, so changed that, thats now fine, still losing water, changed water pump, thats now fine, no water leaks from the front of the engine, but......

.......topped up the water and it dropped out of the engine low down at the back of the engine, no idea where from, I am fairly sure it is coming from the drivers side (righthand side) below the hand priming pump, but in quite large quanities, seems to be close to where the engine meets gearbox.

maybe a core plug ?

Any ideas?

Help it's driving me nuts.

Check out the pipes, that run alongside the rocker cover and into the bilkhead for the heater.  they a little fiddly to get on and also check that they have tight jubilee clips on

Have you had a look at the carpets in the foot wells it's not uncomern for the heater matrix to leak a fair bit of water.

Pipes from the head to the heater, the one that connects to the back passenger side of the block is a swine to tighten up sometimes and both pips can chaff on the back of the head, worth checking.

Yep checked the heater pipes when I had it apart to do the head last week, they seem fine, thanks anyway.

The jubilee clips are crap, but they all are, but none letting by, and the heater matrix is inside the cabin....isn't it, my leak is definatley from the block somewhere.

it was quite alot of water in a couple of seconds, it was like someone emptying a pint glass and it hit the bar (probably the anti-roll bar) that goes right accross the underside of the car, the one which is the reason the sump is shallowed at the rear-end.

The water hit that bar on the right-hand side.

But until this snow stops, I ain't jacking it up on axle stands and climbing under it.

Someone must have or had the same problem.

cheers
Gary

I'd suggest you check the core plugs then, not a fun job as you say.

Does the water continually run out at the speed?

i did the core plugs on me 300 but they were down the starter motor side , i do know there is one at the back of the block inside the bell housing i think . but iff it was that water would be emptying out the wading hole ?. think its a wait till the snows gone and take a peek underneath ..alan

i did the core plug behind the waterpump, i suppose the hardness is just in what you have to take off to get to it

I think you have just sussed it !!

After the water rushes out it seems to be exiting the engine between the block and gearbox.............................Damn that probably means the core plug is knackered eh ?

that sounds expensive..........................is it engine out or gearboxes out........................if so which is easier ?

and is the wading plug a 10mm (could be a 13mm) bolt with washer in the dead centre bottom od bell housing, cos if it is.....it is in place, and it shouldn't be should it ?

assuming this is the problem and it sounds like it could be.................whats the fix  ?

cheers guys

Gary.

If you have a ramp-gearbox out and if you don't then engine out, slightly safer and not much difference in the amount of work.

Then it's flywheel off and flywheel housing off, at which point you can see the core plug.

Pull it out with a self-taping screw and a crowbar, hammer a new one in with some sealant round it

rebuild the engine and refit

I think theres a core plug at the back of the head facing the bulkhead which would send water on top of the bell housing. Easy job to do if you can get to them, cost about a quid each and a spot of lock tight. Had that one go on my series, just cut a hole in the  bulk head and made a new panel to fit.

How lucky was that..............

........There I was all ready to take the engine out to get at this rear core plug (BTW it is above the bellhousing on rear of block) and as I removed the exhaust manifold to make the engine as small as possible, so I would have some room to move........The centre core plug had fell out (probably the extreme cold) and with the manifold and turbo removed it was easy to fit, with the lump in place.

the only down side is that I shelled out £165 on a engine crane that I could have done without spending.

still it's all back together, and working.

While I've got your attention.....Is there anything I need to do to the turbo or just put it back and forget it.

Cheers
Gary.

I'd clean it out with a toothbrush and WD40.
