winch and springs

hi, hope some one can help me hear.

I am thinking of fitting a winch to my 90, the winch is a husky superwinch and has the bumper to go with it, so it is very heavy.

now do i need to change the front and rear springs? or just the fronts, or will my current springs be OK?

the springs and shocks fitted now are 6 months old and are bog standard lr items.

what are my options?

In my opinion that winch and bumper are totaly incomp incum incompati incompatub not right for your vehicle. PM me your address and I will be round to take it out of your way for the scrap price.  8-[

IMHO:  As the springs are quite new you should be at near proper ride height and handling moment, so take some measurements now. Fit the winch and see how far the front drops. Suck it and see really. If the handling is okay I suspect you will get away with your newish standard strength springs for awhile longer whilst they are good but the extra weight will surely take their toll on their normal life span and make them sag before long (but you might as well get some use out of them). You can then fit heavy duty *standard height* springs which will take the load. To fit counterparts on rear is to make the ride height look correct compared to upgraded front (no one likes a saggy bum).

if i did upgrade to Hd springs then i would fit them all round, can you still buy black hd springs?
as the ones in the mags are all colours.

Just found out some info on my springs that are fitted now, the spring rates are......


fronts 175 lbs

rears 225 lbs

would these be up to it?

does any one know what where fitted to the camel 90s?

Hi Az, how's things? Family doing well I hope?

I think the fronts may be a bit light duty for what you want to fit, but I would fit and see before spending money!

I wouldn't go any stiffer on the back, as unless you constantly carry lots of weight you will find it very "crash bang" on nomal driving. There is no reason why you can't fit a better rated spring just on the front, check out Terrafirma as they seem to have some good kit.

the springs from Devon 4 x 4 are a bit to steep for me, thanks any way.

sure? what does the workshop manual say? I ask because CSW 110 tdi are fitted with much softer than standard springs and have a boge unit fitted to the A frame to compensate (it pumps up the bum). I do not know if they where ever fitted to the County 90's. The boge unit fails in time leaving the weaker springs to try and cope but they become saggy (the is a test procedure for the unit in manual). The boge unit is $$$ so often it either removed or left in place not working but standard or heavy duty spring are hten fitted to restore ride height.

There is no boge unit on a 90 CSW,

I read that all 90s used on the camel trophy where CSWs, and that as standard they had HD springs allround, which where made up from std 90 rears on the front and hd 90 rears on the rear.

it was on a camel trophy web site.

the 90 parts book only lists HD springs for the rear, i will have a look in the workshop manual to see what that says( if i can find it!!  :doh: )
