OMG its still overheating
« on: January 17, 2010, 20:37:56 »
Its driving us crazy now, we have tried everything on our 300tdi 90 and she is still over heating, here is what we have done,
thermostat/housing
water pump and all gaskets
new radiator
sender unit
done many coolant changes, check airlocks
we are baffled

what happends is she is fine on town runs, as soon as we hit motorway it goes up just under red, and then let of throttle and cools down,
if anyone can see something we are missing, any help is much appricated.
Thanks

Hi,

Im having similar problems with my 300Tdi 90. Just ordered a new rad. Been suggested to me that it may be the cooling fan not turning at correct speed when engine gets up to temp, not had time to check mine yet but might be an idea for you to look at.

Cheers,
Iain

When you are on the motorway does the 90 seem as though it is struggling to keep up with the flow of traffic and is it overheating on the hills(accelerating more to keep up with the flow)As soon as you back off it starts to cool down.

Is it overheating I.E. does it boil over or is the gauge just high?

run around without the front grill fitted, when it goes high temp then pull over and feel the radiator - should be hot all over it... if not then go from there.

Might be a daft question but it's not a disco engine or got a disco temp sender has it? Seem to remember something about when fitting disco engines to defenders that the temp gauge needs a different sender as the disco one causes the defender gauge to read high temps...

Just been reading this thread, my mate had a similar experience with his 300Tdi, it was fitted with a Kenlowe that was fitted the wrong way round (by a land rover dealer !!) and therefore blew warm air from the engine back into the radiator, that in turn prevented cooler air from getting into the rad from the front of the motor !

5 Minute fix, easy when he knew what it was !

You've not over fulled it or played with the boost pressure have you?  EGT's might be sky high if you have, which is why when you back off it cools down.

Hi all thanks for reponses will check them, we think it is getting there we spent all weekend doing headgasket, we reset valves, clean up head, cleaned up everything and she runs like a dream, took her down a14 and temp gauge went beyond red into danger zone so pulled over but no sign of overheating so dodgey gauge/sender/earth cable so we are tackling that now! thanks for everyones help its has helped us out alot
