Fuel Pump Modification?? What is that all about
« on: April 11, 2005, 23:13:42 »
Someone at Whitworth on Sunday mentioned about a mod on the fuel pump that would give around 15BHP extra.

He said it cost about £20 to do

Anyone know anything about it?? How would I know if it had been done or not already??
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

basically remove the thread seals and adjust the fuel delivery rate and smoke screw. would be wise to combine thi swith an increase in boost pressure otherwise in my experience all you will do is generate more smoke and eat more fuel, both mods should be carried out together to maintain the appropriate air fuel ratios

Hmm. Be very very careful if you do this.

When LR set up the fuel pump, they set it slightly low to give better engine life and reliability.

Yes, you can improve performance by increasing the settings, but this will inevitably lead to worse reliability.

A collegue of a friend did the mod, and went a touch too far on the adjustment. He was looking for a new engine within a couple of weeks of doing the mod.

So, yeh but no but yeh but...

Cheers

i'd agree with the be careful comment

mine is tweaked fairly high 1.2-1.3 bar at the manifold and god knows how many turnson the pump, it was initatially setup by jeremy fearn when the intercooler was fitted, since then it has been tweaked further but after takignlotsof advice.
Mine does seem to hammer the oil though, 3k for an oil and filter change without fail
Its swings and roundabouts, if you want more performance it WILL come at a cost in the long run

mmhh, lots of food for thoughts there....

I think I will wait and see how it does perform and if I am happy with it. I am at the moment.

I dont want to have to replace/repair other stuff just cos I THINK I might need more power....

If you're keeping the TDi standard it might be worth cleaning your intercooler out with parafin or diesel.
