rover v8 and tvr v8 togather?

hello,
i have a range rover 3.9 v8 thats dead, a mate has just cracked the engine block on his TVR 4 litre v8,
am i right in thinking they are very simular
if so what did they do to get the extra point 1 of a litre from it?
i suspect that the con rod has bust on the 3.9, there are no push rods bent, will the inerds of the TVR fit inside the 3.9?
please have a debate and bring all the measurements and facts to help
cheers kieran

If the TVR is the same as a P38 4.0 l, the capacity is the same (3947) but the block is different. It's crossbolted and uses a bigger journalled crank, so a no-go for swapping inners!

RRB is the person to talk to on this subject, i'm sure one of Andy's Rangys had a tvr block in it.

TVR used the 3.9 engine in the Chimera I think, it was based on a production Range Rover engine. The capacity is 3947cc. The 400 HC is the 3.9 with a high lift cam in it.
TVR offered an optional 5.0 kit which included crank, pistons and possibly rods, that's what mine is.
then the 430HC was based on the 4.2 LSE engine with the "Iceberg" crank, actually 4275 IIRC.
The 1995 soft dash RRC had the "interim" engine, a serpentine 3.9/4.2 using the P38 blocks with lugs for cross-bolting but not cross bolted and using the "old" crank. The had distributors in the front cover and crank driven oil pumps. They also appeared in Disco for a while.
the P38 does indeed use a crank with bigger journals to increase it's strength, also possibly redesigned to use thinner oils. The 4.0 has the same nominal bore and stroke but was called the 4.0 to distinguish it from the 3.9. The pistons and rods are different, the gudgeon pin being higher in the piston. The better blocks were earmarked for the 4.6
The 4.0 uses the same basic EFi head casting but is machined more to suite the later compposite head gasket which settles to 1.2mm as opposed to 0.5mm for the tin head gasket.
So Kizz, to answer your question you need to check the engines are the same "vintage". If so then I would pull the heads off and check the pistons are the same. I would be careful of swapping the pistons between engines unless you can accurately measure their fit inside the liners, it is very possible that TVR use oversized pistons to get the swept area up slightly.
The crank and rods are probably interchangeable, the heads on the TVR will almost certainly have bee tickled too, so I'd put them back in the TVR.

Stiching?
http://monsterguide.net/how-to-repair-an-engine-block
That was a quick google. IMO not something you should do at home, but an engineering place wouldn't charge the earth to get it done.
