removing a fan/viscous unit..

   Hi all,

    Ive diaganosed my over heating problem as a failed viscous unit but now i need to take it off, ive got a 32 mm spanner for the nut on the end but i was wondering how to stop the unit turning..

 any ideas?

stick a big allen key, drill,  screwdriver, bit of bar or whatever in one of the holes in the pulley to stop the whole lot turning when undoing the coupling

No they are not as iv'e just had mine off [td5].My mate told me to give the spanner a light tap first with a hammer.
They do seize up sometimes.
I jammed a big screw driver between the nut and levered it down againsted the screws on the pully wheel.

all tdis are left hand thread so need turning clockwise to undo
td5 engines are normal right hand thread so need undoing anticlockwise
i never bother locking them off, a quick blow with a 2lb lump hammer shocks them undone

The serpentine V8 is RH thread, all other 8s and TDi are LH thread.  I don't know about TD5.  I do know that the RH thread viscous fans have a smaller nut.  If it spins when you tap it with a ahmmer than try tightening the belt with a clamp or large mole grip.

TD5 is normal 'undo anticlockwise'.

Shock with lump hammer worked for me.  Take out one of the pulley bolts to get a swing with the spanner.

Do remember not to lie the new unit down flat - must stand upright or the viscous lock won't work. A
3 Defenders on and I'd still buy another.....

I did not know that, they are supposed to be self-priming once fitted :-k

  thats a worry, i had my mine delivered..i hope the courier knew this aswell! lol

I was told this for 'storing' mine for nearly a month while I was doing the head in my spare time - I'd guess lying down on the delivery run would be acceptable!!  :D  A
3 Defenders on and I'd still buy another.....
