rock hard brake pedal

i have changed my old 2 pipe master for a 3 pipe disco one and now the brake pedals hard and you have to stamp on it to get it to do anything i have changed pads discs shoes cylinders but its still the same??????????????

have you re conected the vac hose?

I have the opposite to you,half way down with the pedal there aint much ,then its rock hard but the brakes are then awsum. I have new disks,pad,calipers,braided hoses ,no air in the system,been bleeded starting with the furthest to the closest and still cant get a good pedal at the top!!!  Work that one out!

When the callipers are new you do get far more returning of the pistons ie more travel, add new pads in and they will feel more spngey, but I suspect that Mike has a point about wheel bearings too.

could also be worn discs if there worn close to the limit the pads have to travel further to make contact

the pads and discs are new and there is no play in the bearings vac hose connected could it be the servo?

remove the vac hose from the engine and make sure its sucking
check there are no leaks in the vac pipe
theres a one way valve in the servo inlet, make sure thats ok

To put all the facts right,its a series 2a fitted with a late defender master and servo.When it had drum brakes all round the pedal was firm at the top,great brakes! I put zeus disks on the front,still brill no difference.When i put them on the rear as well this is when the fun has started.I have no vac leaks.I did this 2 years ago and still its BUGGIN me,i bleed the system now and then but still no difference. The only thing i can think of is some thing aint compatable ie the master or servo.Its now got to the stage where im going to throw the master/servo away and buy a new series dual master and servo because its a great pedal on my other motor! In the back of my mind i remember theres 2 seals in the master and if one leaks it can cause this?????  Just one more thing second pump of the pedal and its firm at the top which makes me think this could be the problem?????

there are different ratio's on servos for the amount of effore required
so they need to be matched to different brake set-ups

That is one of my lines of thinking ,its just that its a late defender servo which will have discs all round so i would have thought it would have been compatable? Anyway got a pedal box coming for a series servo so i shall buy new servo and master and see what happens??? They could be on ebay soon with they dont work?

changed servo pump all fixed. wierd tho as the old one was sucking but it must fail under pressure!
