PRC8230?? 300tdi won't switch off!
« on: February 03, 2010, 20:57:18 »
My 300 tdi has decided to not switch off intermitantly today. When I turn the key off the ignition lights and consumers are all off but the engine continues to run. Turning the key s couple if times causes it to switch off so I'm guessing it's the PRC8230 switch?

I'm away laning this weekend, and although I'm happy to stall the 90 to switch it off, I'm worried that the start function may fail on me. Am I being paranoid as the two parts of the switch are obviously separate. My concern is whether it's definately the switch, plus the fact that I have no time to fit it (plus I'm not an avid DIY'er).

Your thoughts on whether the diagnosis is right and if you think the start side will be ok for the weekend?

could either be the ignition switch itself or the stop solenoid on the pump
if lights ect ect are going up but the engine carrys on running id be inclinded to say its the stop solenoid on the pump

Can you pull the connection on the pump stop solenoid to see if it stops? I don't know about 300's, so not sure how accessible it is.

easy as 200tdi unless it's got the immobiliser anti-tamper fitted which attempts to prevent such things (in which case it take 5 mins longer )

Well, sod's law dictates that the problem has not occoured again since I asked the question!  I think what I'll do if it does happen again is to leave it running and disconnect the wire to the shut-off solenoid to see if it switches off.  If it does then I guess it's the ignition switch (still sending a signal when it's off) and if it doesn't then the solenoid must be sticking.

Someone told me that they can suffer from swarf in the pump which affects the solenoid.  Only question is why on earth would there be swarf in the pump................. sounds expensive!

Well, as with anything 'Defender oriantated' I may find that it was just a momentary blip, if not then I'll report back!

thats from when the injector pump starts to break up, generally there nackered then, with symptoms of poor performance, wont start when warm amoung other things.
